Who We Are MPS Mission We exist to ensure that all students learn, and to support their growth into knowledgeable, skilled, confident citizens capable of succeeding in their work, personal and family lives into the 21st century. Bryn Mawr Mission The mission of Bryn Mawr Community School is to teach students academic and social skills that will lead them to succeed in their lives as children and adults. Motto Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe Logo Designed in 1997 and incorporates 3 themes. Faces of children symbolizes we exist to help children be successful. The seeds symbolizes nurturing and growing and a commitment to the Environment. The Bulldog is for strength and pride. School Stats * Our demographics include: 47.2% African American, 3.4% American Indian, 25.9% Asian/Pacific Islander, 10.6% Hispanic, 12.8% White • Our community school is located in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood and serves a diverse group of 350 students PreK, including Early Childhood Special Ed. through 5th grade students. • After school and summer academics include: Girls in Engineering, Mathematics and Science, GEMS and Guys in Science and Engineering GISE. In addition we provide Dancing Classrooms and Starbase MN for our 5th grade students as well as varied Art/Science opportunities for other grades. * Designated as a School Forest by the DNR last school year. Training from DNR provided for staff, science teacher added to specialists. • Partner with Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association (BMNA) to collaborate on building a strong community environment and opportunities.
Our Current Reality Challenges • Bryn has been designated as a Comprehensive Support and Improvement school under the North Star accountability system at Minnesota Department of Education • Identified because an average of all student data on the State’s accountability measure found our school to be among the bottom 5% of schools that receive Title 1 funding. • Identified also because the following groups were found to be performing similarly - Black students - Students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch - Students who receive special education services Strengths • Diverse, resilient student population • Strong, collaborative, compassionate staff • School Forest Designation • Weekly opportunities for Art, Physical Education, Science, Media • Health, fitness, nutrition reinforced daily • Varied Arts/Science opportunities - Starbase MN - Dancing Classrooms - Stages Theatre - Upstream Arts • Community Partnerships - Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association - Inner City Tennis - Cowles Center
What’s a School Improvement Plan? Our school improvement plan: Sets the goals that our school community is working to achieve Identifies the strategies or activities that will help us reach those goals together Every Minneapolis Public School is required to develop, implement, and monitor a school improvement plan.
Our School Improvement Plan Strategy to achieve our goal: • Professional Development - Benchmark Rituals and Routines, District Literacy, Standards and Backwards Planning, Collaborative Team Planning, Lexia, Illuminate • Rituals and Routines for Literacy • Planning and Implementing Mini-Lessons • Independent Reading and Writing • Guided Reading • EL Strategies – Authentic Talk, Cooperative Learning, Productive Language, • MTSS – Multi-Tiered Systems and Support - Data Dives - Long/Short Term Instructional Cycles - Intervention Meetings Goal: Reading Achievement for All Students will increase from 16% to 24%.
Our School Improvement Plan Strategy to achieve our goal: • Professional Development – Standards and Backwards Planning, Collaborative Team Planning, Trajectory of Learning, MTSS • MTSS Multi-Tiered Systems and Support • Collaborative Team Planning • Guided Math • Dreambox • Number Talks • MTSS – Multi-Tiered Systems and Support - Data Dives - Long/Short Term Instructional Cycles - Intervention Meetings Goal: Math Achievement for All Students will increase from 14% to 22%.
Our School Improvement Plan Strategy to achieve our goal: • Attendance Meeting Weekly • Intervention Plans created and monitored • Full Time Check and Connect support Goal: The consistent attendance rate will increase from 74% to 82%.
Our School Improvement Plan Strategy to achieve our goal: • School-wide Behavior System – Equity and Engagement Team • Home Visits and Open House • Heart of Dance – Dancing Classrooms, Starbase MN, Visual Thinking Strategies, Upstream Arts, Cowles Center • Implicit Bias Professional Development • Second Step • Self Management, Relationship Skills, Self Reflection and Assessment Goal: The total Suspension and Out of School Removals will decrease from 79 to 40.
How We Measure Student Progress Assessments help us answer questions such as: • Are we teaching what we think we are teaching? • Are students learning what we intend for them to be learning? • Are all students improving and being appropriately challenged? Some of the assessments our students will take this year are: • FAST – Reading and Math • KCom/Com – Math • Cogat – Grade 2 – Advanced Learners • Access – EL • MCA – Reading, Math (3-5) & Science (5) • Unit/Formative Assessments We want to make sure our students are learning as much as possible, so we use state and district assessments to determine their strengths and areas for growth. The results of these assessments help us figure out how we can better support our students in the classroom.
How We’ll Share Student Progress with You Throughout the year, we’ll share information with you about how your student is doing in the classroom. We’ll do it in the following ways: Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 15th (PM) & 16th All Day and February 18th 7:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Quarterly report cards will be sent home with students Notes Phone Calls You are welcome at Bryn Mawr anytime!
What is Title I? Title I supports our School Improvement Plan, and the funding we receive helps us reach our goals. • Title I is a federal program that provides money to schools and districtsto help them ensure all children have an equal opportunity to get a high-quality education and achieve proficiency on our state’s academic standards and assessments.
For the 2019-2020 school year, we received $189,039in Title I funding, which makes up .04 %of our school budget. We are required to use Title I funding to improve the academic achievement of all students and engage YOU, our families, in that process! Bryn Mawr is a schoolwide Title I program, which means all our students are able to benefit from the services we provide with our Title I funding.

As a family member in a Title I School, you have the right to… Request information from the district about whether your student’s teacher meets State licensing approval for the grade and subject being taught, is teaching with a waiver, and/or has certification for the field being taught Request information about the qualifications of any paraprofessional providing instruction Know how your child’s school is rated on its state test scores Expect regular communication with your school in a language that you can understand Work with other families and staff to develop a compactbetween our school and our families Help plan how money for family involvement should be spent Work with teachers, other families, and the school principal to develop a family involvement plan Ask for a meeting with your school principal or your child’s teacher at any time

Meets the 4th Tuesday of each month from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. in the media center. • Visit your child’s classroom or volunteer at our school! • Talk to your child’s teacher about events and issues that may affect your child’s work or behavior.
