  2. BELIEFS • Improvement of the human race • Establish free, public, non-sectarian education for every man and woman. • Johann Pestalozzi • Schooling should be more humane

  3. ACHIEVEMENTS • Established free libraries • National school for teachers • Won financial backing for education • Teachers wages doubles • 50 new secondary schools built • State aid to education doubled • Textbooks and educational equipment improved

  4. COMMON SCHOOL JOURNAL • Revolutionized the common school system in Massachusetts – then spread to other states. • Annual Reports included: • Fifth Annual Report (1841): Economy would improve if citizens were educated. Gave businesses incentive to pay taxes to support education. • Tenth Annual Report (1846): Education was a natural right for every child.

SIX MAIN PRINCIPLES The public should no longer remain ignorant Education should be paid for, controlled, and sustained by an interested public Education will be best provided in schools that embrace children from a variety of backgrounds Education must be non-sectarian Education must be taught by the spirit, methods, and discipline of a free society Education should be provided by well-trained, professional teachers.

EDUCATION REFORM • Wanted to bring children of all classes (social standings) together in a common environmentwith the goal of achieving an equal learning experience. • Gave an opportunity to the less fortunate to advance in the social scale and education would "equalize the conditions of men” • Building a person's character was just as important as reading, writing and arithmetic • Reference to Johann Pestalozzi • The common school movement enabled women an opportunity to become the primary teachers.
