DROPSONDE STATUS AVAPS USER’S GROUP MEETING NCAR - BOULDER, CO KEN GOSS and Ilkka Ikonen, 29 April 2009
DROPSONDE SHIPMENT LOG 2008 CUSTOMER TYPE • NOAA AOC RD93F • USAF 53WRS RD93F • UCAR RD93F • AWI Germany RD93F • DLR Germany RD93F • Meteo France RD93F • Japan RD93F • UK Met Office RD93F • Taiwan, National University RD93F • China RD93F • Arete Associates RD93F 2457 = TOTAL for 2008
Recent Production Quantity History • 2457 in 2008 (not the best year for Vaisala) • 2650 in 2007 • 4789 in 2006 • 3833 in 2005 • 3532 in 2004 • 3516 in 2003 • 3649 in 2002 • 3579 in 2001
2008 Production Notes • A fault was discovered in the configuration file for the UBLOX 4P chip, required Vaisala to recall all 2008 units. • A problem was found with the GPS antenna specified for the Ublox 4P chip, required Vaisala to recall all 2008 units a second time. • LMX Synthesizer chip are in VERY VERY low supply. We are at the end of the ability to build RD93 rev F Dropsondes. • Full 4 Channel AVAPS system delivered to China at the start of 2008. • German AWI started to operate converted DC3
Issues related to the NEW Dropsonde Sensor Suite • Due to some programming errors in Vaisala the adaptation of the new sensor suite (RSS921) was delayed by several months. • First RSS921 sensor suites were delivered NCAR July 2008 to be used in the T-PARC and for testing purposes. • In the NCAR laboratory testing and during the T-PARC inconsistent behavior of T-sensor was observed. • Same problems were observed in Vaisala and by radiososnde customers (unfortunately) • The reason was improper handling of the sensor suites in the production process within Vaisala. • Vaisala has taken due measures to correct the situation.
2009 Outlook • Transition Planning to the NEX Gen Dropsonde will be required with each of you as we ramp down production of RD93 in favor of the new RD94. • Vaisala appreciates the opportunity to work with you and we look forward to another year of successful missions. • We thank you for your business.
