The Atoning Sacrifice of Christ Romans 3:25b-31
Law • The entire Old Testament • The books of Moses • The “10 Commandments” • God’s moral law of right and wrong • Any principle or rule of operation • Any system of good works designed to gain God's acceptance
Justification • Justification is the act of God whereby He declares a guilty sinner to be righteous through faith in Christ and His atoning sacrifice on the cross. • The justified sinner is acquitted in the courtroom of God and gains God’s complete forgiveness and acceptance.
Atoning Sacrifice • Propitiation or Expiation • An atoning sacrifice (propitiation or expiation) is a sacrifice that pays the penalty of sin, and thereby, satisfies the justice of God concerning sin and its consequences.
Redemption • Redemption points to a price paid so that a prisoner or a slave might go free. • We were prisoners and slaves under the power of sin and Satan. • Jesus Christ gave His life, making a redemptive payment, not to Satan, but to satisfy the justice of God concerning sin so that we might go free.
Grace • God's unmerited favor • GRACE … • God's • Riches • At • Christ's • Expense
Faith • Faith is simply taking God at His word, trusting Him, and receiving His grace.
F.F. Bruce • "Pardon, liberation, atonement – all are available to men and women by His free initiative and may be appropriated by faith. And faith in this sense is not a kind of good work that is specially meritorious in God's sight; it is a simple and open-hearted attitude to God which takes Him at His word and gratefully accepts His grace."
How God’s Justice Works • We’ve all sinned. • God's justice requires just punishment. • The just punishment is eternity in the Lake of Fire. • God can postpone the sinner's punishment for a period of time and still be just. • OT Believers (Rom. 3:25) • All People (2 Pet. 3:9)
How God’s Justice Works • Ultimately, a just punishment for sin must be paid. • Consequently, God sent Jesus to be an atoning sacrifice for our sin, receiving a just punishment for the sins of the world. • Thus, through Christ, God Himself paid the penalty for sin, and in doing this, showed Himself to be just and the justifier of those who trust Christ.
F.F. Bruce • "In the self-offering of Christ, God’s righteousness is vindicated and the believing sinner is justified. For Christ occupies an unique position as God's representative with man and man's representative with God. As the representative man He absorbs the judgment incurred by human sin; as the representative of God He bestows God's pardoning grace on men and women."

I Gave My Life for Thee I gave my life for thee; My precious blood I shed, That thou might ransomed be, And quickened for the dead. I gave, I gave My life for thee. What hast thou given for Me?
I Gave My Life for Thee I suffered much for thee, More than thy tongue can tell, Of bitterest agony, To rescue thee from hell. I've borne, I've borne it all for thee. What hast thou borne for Me?
I Gave My Life for Thee And I have brought to thee, Down from My home above, Salvation full and free, My pardon and My love. I bring, I bring rich gifts to thee. What hast thou brought to Me?
