The life (or history) of Pi Tim Rundle & Mollie Safran
History -Babylonians thought Pi was 3 -The Rhind Papyrus from Egypt had pi as 3.1605 -Archimedes first calculated for pi -The greek letter π started being used in the 1700s
How did these people discover Pi? -They were observing what they saw in the real world -All circles had a circumference that was a little more than 3 times the diameter -In Cyberchase, the kids discover this by observing circles they find http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61snPFqYazc
Archimedes and Pi -Archimedes was the first to try and compute the actual value of pi -He bracketed pi with polygons, meaning he used a shape inside and outside a circle to try and estimate the dimensions of the circle
Pi’s Impact -made it possible to find the dimensions of any circle -used in equations for circumference, volume, area, surface area of circles and spheres -crucial for development of society and our understanding of mathematics
How pi is useful! -Egyptians used pi to build the pyramids -Used by Hebrews to calculate the size of a grain silo for farming -Today it is often used by engineers by machining parts for aircraft -Used to calculate the amount of fuel needed for a plane’s trip

The first word has three letters, the second word has one letter and so on. The sentence corresponds to the first 10 digits of pi: 3.141592653 (although one must remember we’re talking pie, not pi). “ (Real Life of Pi)
