In Spanish, if someone asks, “How long has this been going on?” or “How long has it been?” you answer with the verb HACER. Hace + period of time + que + present tense verb. I’ve been wanting (present tense) to go to Puerto Rico for 4 years. It makes 4 years that I want to go to Puerto Rico = Hace cuatro años que quiero ir a Puerto Rico. Doctor, I’ve been waiting for an hour! = Doctor, it makes an hour that I wait! _Doctor, haceunahoraqueespero! ____
We’ve been studying for 15 minutes = _Hace quince minutosqueestudiamos____
If you’re the one doing the asking, do the same thing, but use “Cuántotiempo” in your sentence, which means “How much time?” ¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + present tense verb?
How long have you been waiting? How much time does it make that you wait? = ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que esperas? How long have you wanted to go to Puerto Rico? How much time does it make that you want to go to Puerto Rico? = ¿Cuántotiempohacequequieresir a Puerto Rico?
If you are talking about the PAST, use the preterite and “hace” to say “ ago.” I went to Mexico a year ago = It makes a year that I went to Mexico. Hace un año que fui a México. ( therecipeisthesame. Just use thepreteriteinstead of thepresent)
When using “ago” you can put the verb first. In this case, you do NOT need the “que” which acts as the “that.” I went to Mexico it makes a year = Fuia México hace un año. Imet her 4 years ago = It makes 4 years that I met her = Hacecuatroañosque la conocí OR I met her it makes 4 years = ____La conocíhacecuatroaños_
