SB13 Vancouver 3-5 June Teresa COADY, Representing: Emilio Miguel Mitre, GBCe (Green Building Council España) SB13 Coordinator, World SB14 Barcelona representative Nils Larsson, SB13-14 Conferences promoters Representative The SB13-14 Series
SB conferences • The SB Conference series was established a decade ago, and is now recognized as the pre-eminent conference series related to sustainable building and construction. • The founding international promoting organizations were CIB and iiSBE. UNEP-SBCI joined in 2005 and FIDIC in 2011. • The conference series began as a bi-annual cycle of world conferences, but has evolved into a three-year cycle.
SB conferences • It should be noted that the uniqueness of the series lies partly in the peer review of papers and its non-commercial aspect, and partly in that delegates tend to be researchers, policy makers and practitioners who are all specialized in sustainable building; • Since inception of the series, a total of about 12,500 delegates have taken part, and by 2014 the total will be about 17,000.
History • CIB launched its first green building conference in London in 1994, then held a second in Paris in 1997; • The Canadian energy ministry launched an international conference in Vancouver in 1998 (GBC ‘98); • These separate streams of activity led to a conference series that now has CIB, iiSBE, UNEP and FIDIC as global co-sponsors; • The first event in the new series was SB2000 in Maastricht, Netherlands, then SB02 in Oslo, Tokyo SB05 in September 2005 and Melbourne 2008.
Regional and national SB conferences • In 2002, we had feedback that our conferences were too focused on developed and northern countries; • This led us to organize a series of national events in the year before each global event; • We have gradually been able to include events in developing countries; • In 2013, we will have 16 national conferences, all of which will focus on various aspects of sustainable building and construction, and these will be linked to the global SB14 event in Barcelona. What is the significance of the series? The series is relatively unique in the following aspects: • The events are non-commercial in nature and are self-financing; • They are designed to attract a mixture of researchers, professionals and policy makers; • Several of these events include a speacial day for young researchers; • All technical papers are peer reviewed; • A selection of best papers from national events are fast-tracked for inclusion in the global events; • Technical papers are kept available for future reference in databases managed by CIB and iiSBE; • Students and delegates from developing countries obtain discounts on registration fees; • SB Challenge, a side event with a display of high-performance project with comparable performance results, adds another unique aspect to the global events.
Recognition We are grateful for the recognition given to the series in the form of theCIB 2013 Construction & Society Award, especially the statement in the Award citation...The SB Conference series embodies everything that the CIB aims to achieve in promoting research and innovation that is to the benefit of society. • Chrisna du Plessis and Vanessa Gomes (both members of CIB and iiSBE) accepting the award at the WBC conference in Brisbane Australia on 09 May 2013.
Support • We greatly appreciate all those who have worked hard to organize these events over the years; • And of course the delegates, whose papers, projects and participation made the events so successful; Nils Larsson, SB series coordinator Emilio Miguel Mitre, SB13 coordinator and WSB14 Barcelona representative Wim Bakens, Secretary-General of CIB Chrisna Du Plessis, CIB representative Luis Bragança, iiSBE representative Curt Garrigan, UNEP-SBCI representative François Baillon, FIDIC representative
