Overview of the Initiative • Funding:EuropeAid (European Commission) • Duration: 3 years • Location: 18 rural villages, 6 cities (in Andhra Pradesh & Tamil Nadu, India) • Partners:adelphi, ICLEI, AGS, AVVAI • Key activities: • Vulnerability & needsassessment (V&NA) • Locallyadapted CCM and CCA guides (LAMG) • Pilot projects and replicationthereof • Capacitydevelopment • Assistance strategy to local authorities • Visibility & networking

Approach: Selection process for pilots Step I: General eligibility (EoI): • Administrative elements (incl. stakeholder approval) • General climate change adaptation relevance • Contribution to sustainable development Step II: Sectoral eligibility (EoI): • Linking vulnerability reduction to specific sectors; also to serve as list of ideas • Description of measure; support documents Step III: Cost & time requirements (EoI): • CapEx + OpEx, timeframe for implementation • Preferred suppliers / PPP partners Step IV: Evaluation & scoring (third party)

  8. Sustainability of the initiative As the project is currently being implemented, sustainability strategy and workable models are being developed, by: • Providing community ownership through decision making and supporting implementation and community led O&M • Creating inclusive institutional structures which offer space to all major stakeholders • Replication of pilots through alternative funding sources • Creating planning toolkits like local adaptation and mitigation guides (LAMGs) as living documents

Lessons learnt on making community-based adaptation work • Local capacity is essential for responding to climatic shocks • Direct and visible benefits accrued by CCA pilots keeps community motivated • Relationship of trust between community, leadership and implementing partners is crucial for implementation
