  4. Generally, ground mount solar panels cost a bit more than rooftop solar on a per-watt basis because of additional labor and permitting that may be required for the installation. That being said, if your property isn’t ideal for rooftop solar, installing a ground-mounted system can actually save you money

  5. Standoff mounting, referred to by some as flush mounting, uses standoffs attached to the roof to support rails on which PV modules are attached. This is the most common method for residential installations. Century Solar Systems specializes in Solar energy Installations. We provide a range of solar panels, string inverters, micro-inverters, balance of systems, monitoring systems and other high quality equipment. We go above and beyond your expectation to deliver, design and install solar energy systems to your needs.

  7. PV systems can be designed to supply power to any type of electrical load at any service voltage.  PV arrays can be mounted on the ground, rooftops and other structures that provide adequate protection, support and solar access. The site conditions usually dictate the best mounting system location and approach to use. Rooftops are very popular locations for installing PV arrays. Because they are elevated, roof mounts offer some physical protection and limited access to the array for safety, and usually provide better sun exposure.

  8. Rooftop PV installations also do not occupy space on the ground that might be needed for other purposes. Rooftop and other building mounted PV arrays must be structurally secured and any attachments and penetrations must be properly weather sealed. Available rooftop areas for mounting PV arrays may be limited by any number of factors, including required spaces about the array for installation and service, pathways and ventilation access for fire codes, wind load setbacks, and spaces for other equipment. Sloped roofs also present a significant fall hazard, and require appropriate fall protection systems and/or personal fall arrest systems (PFAS) for installers and maintenance workers.

  9. The layout of a PV array can have a significant effect on its natural cooling and operating temperatures. A landscape (horizontal) layout may have a slight benefit over a portrait (vertical) layout when considering the passive cooling of the modules. Landscape is when the dimension parallel to the eaves is longer than the dimension perpendicular to the eaves. In a landscape layout, air spends less time under the module before escaping and provides more uniform cooling. Standoff mounts operate coolest when they are mounted at least 3 inches above a roof.

  11. As solar developers expand into new states or regions, a new solar design question often comes up: How should the design practices from the home office be mapped to the new locations or regions? Historically, design choices were based specifically on a project’s latitude. Many solar engineers held that a module’s tilt had to be equal to the latitude at the location—and furthermore that the row spacing was calculated based on the shadows from the rows on the winter solstice (also impacted significantly by the location’s latitude).

  12. Historically, modules were tilted at or near the latitude of the project’s location. This would mean a 25° tilt in Miami, a 35° tilt in Raleigh, North Carolina and a 45° tilt in Seattle. This orientation optimizes for the sun angles throughout the year, pointing the modules as close as possible to the sun’s average position in the sky.

  13. Generally, ground mount solar panels cost a bit more than rooftop solar on a per-watt basis because of additional labor and permitting that may be required for the installation. That being said, if your property isn’t ideal for rooftop solar, installing a ground-mounted system can actually save you money

  14. Then, the row spacing was typically defined based on a rule of not allowing inter-row shade on the winter solstice from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This created a double-whammy impact on row spacing. Not only are modules tilted more steeply at higher latitudes, but because the sun is lower in the horizon on the winter solstice in those northern locations, the shadows they cast are longer. As a result, the row spacing in northern latitudes was typically very large—in the example here, nearly 9’ in Seattle, compared to under 2’ in Miami.

  15. These design rules are good for maintaining a high energy productivity per watt (specifically, optimizing kWh/kWp), but result in smaller systems when working on space-constrained rooftops. For example, the same rooftop that could support a 545-kWdc array in Miami would field just a 240-kWdc array in Seattle—a difference of over 55%! When modules were expensive, this was the right tradeoff to make. But as prices fell over time, the high-tilt approach made less and less sense.

  16. JinkoSolar renewed its partnership with GRID Alternatives, a national leader in making solar technology and job training accessible to low-income communities. JinkoSolar has donated 600 kW of high-efficiency solar modules to support GRID Alternatives’ work developing and implementing solar projects and offering hands-on job training in under served communities.

  17. The partnership will help GRID Alternatives to meet its goal of installing more than 10 megawatts of solar power in 2019, helping families and affordable housing providers save millions of dollars in energy costs over the lifetimes of their solar systems. With JinkoSolar’s support, GRID Alternatives will also be providing hands-on solar installation training to over 4,000 individuals.

  18. Building on a deep partnership with GRID Alternatives that has been built over the past five years, this renewal reaffirms JinkoSolar’s commitment to making solar power accessible to everyone. “We always felt it important that the benefits of solar be widely available to all communities across the U.S. and around the globe,” said Nigel Cockroft, general manager of JinkoSolar. “We believe in the GRID Alternatives model and are proud to continue to support their expansive beneficial programs.”

  19. “Our work brings together the solar industry, governments, utilities, job training organizations, affordable housing providers and local communities to ensure solar power benefits everyone and we’re thankful for JinkoSolar’s support,” said Erica Mackie, GRID Alternatives CEO and co-founder. “Large-scale equipment partnerships like JinkoSolar’s make it possible to make the financial, career-building and environmental benefits of solar power accessible to all communities.”

  20. Sunworks will install a 1.5-MW solar power and battery storage construction project for Kingston Technology, a manufacturer of memory products and quality technology solutions for PCs, servers, smart phones, cameras and other electronic devices.

  21. Construction of the new project is expected to commence in mid-2019 after required utility company approvals at Kingston’s corporate headquarters in Fountain Valley, California, and will include a 730-kW ballast roof mount system and a 772-kW solar carport structure. In addition, Sunworks will integrate a NantEnergy energy storage system that is comprised of 10 30-kW inverters, 10 40-kWh battery banks and control management software. The new system is an integral component of Kingston’s plans to reduce its electrical footprint by 20% as well as advance its corporate sustainability initiatives.

  22. “Kingston Technology is committed to innovative technology and has consistently set the industry standards for quality and reliability while maintaining focus on social responsibility,” said Sunworks CEO Chuck Cargile. “Solar power is a natural way for Kingston to reduce energy costs, enhance environmental efficiency and raise the bar for social responsibility and sustainability. Sunworks is proud to partner with such a high quality organization.”

  23. “We selected Sunworks based on the company’s proven experience, deep industry expertise and solid reputation in the solar industry,” said Larry Gonzales, Kingston Technology VP of administration. “Their solution matches well with our requirements for implementing solar power and we look forward to working with them to implement a comprehensive power solution that is environmentally considerate. Going solar is the latest step in our goal to better address our growth and leave Kingston a better place for the next generation.”

  24. When it comes to lithium-ion batteries, reports of spontaneous fires in phones, hoverboards, cars and laptops have become all too common. The same risks of thermal runaway and fire danger exist when it comes to residential and commercial energy storage installations. But not all lithium-ion batteries pose a fire danger.
