History • Situation: From the Academic Affairs view point, there is lots of anecdotal information, but no hard facts. • Solution: Two part study of adjuncts to be conducted by Institutional Research.
The Greater OKC Metro Study • Purpose: To gain an understanding of the market place. • Means: A survey instrument and personal visit to metro area institutions. • Population: Institutions drawing from the same applicant pool and in close proximity to UCO. • 83% response rate
The UCO Adjunct Study • Purpose: To gain an understanding of how UCO adjunct/part-time faculty perceive various issues. • Means: Electronic Survey, Invitation Via Email • Response Rate: 40%
Results • UCO pay rates are higher. • UCO uses more adjunct/part-time faculty. • UCO offers the same benefits. • Four other institutions have a position similar to UCO’s Lecturer. • At the FR and UG level, UCO adjuncts/part-time faculty teach a higher than average percentage of courses and credit hours. • At the GR level, UCO adjuncts/part-time faculty teach a higher than average percentage of courses. • Nearly all institutions use the same recruiting methods. • Most institutions have no formal methods of retention.
