THE STORY When the time came for the deliverance of Israel out of Egypt ( the house of bondage), God gave specific instructions to Moses concerning the means of deliverance. The head of each household was to take the blood of a slain lamb and sprinkle the blood on the top of the door and the two sides of the door. At midnight the death angel would pass through the land and every house that did not have the token of blood on the door would suffer judgment.
EXODUS 12 ~Tell the whole community…a lamb for a house ~Choose the lamb on the 10th , kill it on the 14th ~ Year old male without defect ~Put blood on sides, top of the door ~Eat roasted with bitter herbs, unleavened bread ~ Do not boil, eat head, legs, inner organs ~Eat in haste ~ The blood is a sign ~A day to commemorate ~Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance
FOUR DAYS OF THE HIDDEN LAMB ~ Exodus 12:3-6 ~ A lamb was taken on the 10th and set aside until the 14th of the month. Taken and kept aside for death for four days. In the week of the crucifixion, Jesus entered Jerusalem on the tenth day and was slain on the fourteenth day . ~ Luke 21,22, and Matthew 26,27. Mark 14,15
WITHOUT SPOT OR BLEMISH ~Exodus 12:5~ The Israelites were to inspect the lamb and see if it came up to God’s standard. Was it perfect, and without spot or blemish?~ I Peter 1:18-20~ All who inspected Jesus Christ - God’s Lamb – found Him to be perfect, without fault, without spot or blemish.
PERFECT LAMB ~ Exodus 12:5 ~ Pilate~ John 18:28 Herod~ Luke 23:8-12 Annas ~ John 18:13,24 Caiaphas ~ John 18:13-14, 19-24,28 Judas ~ Matthew 27:3-10 The Centurion ~ Matthew 27:54 The repentant thief~ Luke 23:39-43
LAMB OF THE FIRST YEAR ~ Exodus 12:5,29-30~ This signified it was a first born lamb. The Lord gave specific instructions concerning the first born of man and beast. Exodus 13:11-13. The theme of first born: Cain set aside for Abel, Ishmael for Isaac, Esau is set aside for Jacob, and Egypt is set aside for Israel. Set aside the natural to bring in the spiritual. The First Adam brought sin and death. Jesus Christ the Firstborn Son brought life. The firstborn of God’s new creation.
A MALE ~ Exodus 12:5 ~ By one man sin entered the world and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men. Romans 5:12. Adam as the male was the seed bearer of the whole unborn human race. We were all “in Adam” I Corinthians 15:22 , Romans 5:12-21
A LAMB FOR A HOUSE ~ Exodus 12:3-5~ We are to be IN the household of faith. Salvation for a household. ~ Acts 16:15, 31, Acts 18:3, Luke 19:5-10 A lamb for a house ~Exodus 12:3-4 A lamb for a nation~ Exodus 29:38-42 A lamb for the world ~John 1:29, Rev 5:12
THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY SHALL KILL IT ~ Exodus 12:6 ~ The whole congregation of Israel was involved in the death of the Passover lamb. The gospels show how the Sanhedrin, the Priests, the people of Israel all clamored for the crucifixion of Jesus and for His blood to be shed. ~ John 19:15, Luke 23:23, Mark 15:33, Matthew 27:4~
AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN ~ Deuteronomy 16:2,6 ~ The Lord stressed in Deuteronomy that the Passover feast was to be “at the going down of the sun.” The prophet Amos ( Amos 8:9-10) foretold a time when the sun would go down at noon. At the crucifixion , the sun was darkened at mid day. The natural light of the sun was darkened in connection with the Son, the spiritual light of the world. Darkness: Genesis 15:12,Ex 10:21, Ex 14:20, 20:21.
NOT A BONE TO BE BROKEN ~ Exodus 12:46, Psalm 34:20 ~ God commanded not a bone was to be broken in the eating of the Passover lamb. At Calvary the soldiers broke the legs of the two thieves in order to hasten their deaths. Jesus had already surrendered His spirit. Not a bone was broken. ~ John 19:33-37 ~
THE BLOOD APPLIED ~ Exodus 12:7,13, 22 ~ The blood must be shed---death The blood applied ---application The blood applied in triune manner The blood a token on the door The blood applied with hyssop. The blood applied by faith. Jesus IS THE DOOR. John 10:9
HOW THE LAMB WAS TO BE EATEN ~ Exodus 12:11~ The lamb was to be eaten in haste, ready for departure from the House of Bondage. We are not citizens of this world. Eating the lamb in haste~ a picture of not getting caught up in the world. Eating the lamb , bitter herbs, unleavened bread in haste made sure the dough had no time to leaven. Leaven in Scripture a picture of sin.
BODY OF THE LAMB MUST BE EATEN ~ Exodus 12: 8-10~ Eaten with unleavened bread ~ no sin in Jesus. Eaten with bitter herbs~ Calvary was bitter. Eaten roasted ~ Fire of God. Consuming fire. Eaten roasted ~ Gospel not watered down Eaten completely~ We are to partake of a walk that involves us completely. So the believer feeds on the mind of Christ (the head ), the walk of Christ (legs), the inward motives and affections (the inward parts).
JOHN 6The King of Bread? The Jewish Passover Feast was near. Where shall we buy bread? Five loaves two fish. It is not Moses that has given you bread. The Bread of Life gives life! They began to grumble. If anyone eats this bread they will live forever. Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you have no life in you. On hearing it, many of his disciples were grumbling about this . Jesus said, does this offend you? From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
READY TO GO ~ Exodus 12:11~ Ephesians 6:14. Stand firm with then with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
UNLEAVENED BREAD ~ Exodus 12:15-20, 34,39 ~ All leaven was to be put away. Leaven is a picture of sin.
UNLEAVENED BREAD 1.Leaven of Herod. Mark 8:15. Spirit of Worldliness 2.Leaven of Sadducees. Matthew 16:6-12. Did not believe in the supernatural, in spirit, in angels or in bodily resurrection. 3.Leaven of Pharisees. Matthew 16:6. Hypocrisy. 4.Leaven of Corinth. I Cor. Pride 5.Leaven of Galatia. Gal 5:9. Legalism.
WHERE HIS NAME IS RECORDED ~ Deuteronomy 16:2, 6~ The Passover was to be kept in a place where God had placed His name. The Tabernacle . The Temple. The true Passover was kept in full view of the Temple. In connection with the true Passover the veil was split in two at the death of God’s Lamb. ~ Matthew 27:50-51~
THE LORDS PASSOVER ~Exodus 12 :11-13,23 ~ The Lord told Israel He would pass through the land of Egypt and smite the houses with death if there was no blood seen. He would “pass-over” the houses of both Israelites and Egyptians if blood was sprinkled. Hence the title “Passover” for this feast. Passover for the obedient meant divine protection and life. It is this way today.
A MEMORIAL ~ Exodus 12:14 ~ The Passover was to be a memorial for all generations. The Lord’s Supper is a memorial feast for He asks us to “do this in remembrance of me.”
A HOLY CONVOCATION ~ Exodus 12 :16 ~ A day of rest. The believer may cease from all striving in the flesh and simply rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
EXPLANATION OF THE SERVICE ~ Exodus 12:25-28 ~ The Lord commanded Israel to keep this service forever and especially when they came into the land of Canaan. So it is the responsibility of the church to explain the work and person of Jesus Christ and the saving power of the blood of the Lamb. In addition, leadership is instructed to celebrate the Lord’s table. A memorial of the new covenant.
THE SONG of MOSES and the LAMB ~ Exodus 15:1-19, Revelation 15:1-4 ~ There is no song in scripture until we come to the “Song of Moses” after the deliverance from Egypt. There is no mention of song with Jesus until Passover week. Mark 14:26. Similarly none can sing the song of the redeemed, until redeemed by the blood of the Lamb of God. The saints who come out of the great tribulation and stand on the Sea of Glass sing the “Song of Moses and the Lamb.”
EXODUS ON EAGLE’S WINGS ~ Exodus 12:40-42, 19:1-6 ~ Israel had been preserved through various plagues. At the midnight hour they experienced the great exodus. The Lord reminded them that His delivering power was on eagle’s wings. The Lord likens Himself to a great eagle caring for its own.
HEALING POWER IN THE LAMB ~ 2 Chronicles 30:13-20, Psalm 105:37 ~ As the children of Israel feasted on the roasted lamb there was a unique manifestation of healing. The Psalmist says there was not one feeble person among them as they came out of Egypt. When Hezekiah restored Passover back to the nation, the Lord healed the people. People of the Lord find healing and deliverance through the true Lamb, Jesus Christ.
