  3. April 17, 1838 Dear Diary, I ain’t never had a problem like this in all my life. I don’t even know what’s right or wrong anymore. Sittin’ on this raft here, Jim’s been talkin’ like a free man. Like a white man almost. He near gave me a heart attack when he told me he was fixin’ to steal his children back from the white man who owns them. When he said it, I warn’t sure what to do. Here I am wonderin’ if I should turn old Jim in, and he’s sayin’ stuff like I’m his best friend. I just don’t know what to do when he talks like that. Jim ain’t never done much wrong, but helpin’ him just don’t feel right neither. The way he looks at me sometimes, man I swear I can see hope in those dark eyes of his. It’s times like these when I wonder why I helped him in the first place. I feel down right stuck, and I don’t know how much longer I can wait before it’s time to make my mind up. -Huck
