Storms and other weather phenomenon The student will investigate and understand basic types, changes, and patterns of weather. Key concepts include: a) identification of common storms and other weather phenomena; b) the uses and importance of measuring, recording, and interpreting weather data; and c) the uses and importance of tracking weather data over time.
Weather phenomenon • Weather phenomena is a weatherevent that can be explained by the principles of meteorology. • Severe weather phenomena are weather conditions that are hazardous to human life and property.
Weather phenomenon:Floods • Too much water. • An overflowing of a large amount of water.
Weather phenomenon:Droughts • A temporary or long shortage of water.
Storms: • A disturbance of the atmosphereaccompanied by wind and usually by rain, snow, hail, sleet, or thunder and lightning.
Type of storms:Thunderstorm • A thunderstorm is a storm of thunder and lightning, often partnered with rain and sometimes hail.
Type of storms:Hurricane • A severe tropical cyclone that is formed over ocean waters usually with heavy rains and winds. • Heavy rains and winds effect the surrounding land. • The eye is the calmest part of the storm.
Type of storms:Tornado • A tornado is a violently rotating funnel of air that is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cloud. • They are often referred to as twisters or cyclones.
Type of storms: Blizzard • A blizzard is a severe snowstorm characterized by strong winds, intense snowfall and low temperatures.
