Physical Properties • characteristic of a substance • colour • odour • lustre • texture • ductility • malleability • melting point • boiling point • state of matter at room temperature (solid, liquid, or gas).
Chemical Properties • the way a substance changes to create something new Common Chemical Properties: • ability to burn – flame, heat • flash point – lowest temp. a flammable liquid will ignite • behaviour in air – react or tarnish • reaction with water – corrode or dissolve • reaction to heating – melt or decompose
Physical Change • nothing new is created • ex a change in the state of matter • dissolving or melting • doesn’t change the chemical properties
Chemical Change • when a substance changes to create something new • there are 5 signs of a chemical change: • colour changes • heat or light produced or absorbed • bubbles of gas are formed • solid material forms (precipitate) • change is difficult to reverse
