Transforming Parabolas

Transforming Parabolas. Using Vertex form. Vertex Form . Vertex form. “a” affects the vertical stretch or shrink h is the horizontal shift of the vertex K is the vertical shift of the vertex If a is negative, the vertex is a maximum value. If a is positive, the vertex is a minimum value.

  1. Transforming Parabolas Using Vertex form

  2. Vertex Form

  3. Vertex form

  4. “a” affects the vertical stretch or shrink h is the horizontal shift of the vertex K is the vertical shift of the vertex If a is negative, the vertex is a maximum value. If a is positive, the vertex is a minimum value. The axis of symmetry is x = h

  5. Converting from standard form to vertex form • Step 1 – Identify a, b and c • Step 2 – find the x-coordinate of the vertex (x=-b/2a) • Step 3 – find the y-coordinate of the vertex by substituting x into the standard form equation • Step 4 – substitute “a” (from the standard form of the equation), h (the x-coordinate from step 2) and k (the y-coordinate from step 3) into the vertex form of a parabola (see pg 255 for example
