Education In Sweden, education is mostly funded by the government and is mandatory for children from 7 to 16. The state requires local governments to offer free childcare for children through the age of 12. Preschool education can begin as early as one year, although educational programs in preschools are not state-funded. Between the ages of 7 and 16, children attend elementary and secondary school (high school). Schools are divided between municipal (public) schools, and independent (private) schools, both of which are free. When children reach the age of 16, they can continue their education in what is called upper secondary programs, where they receive rigorous and specialized training. In addition to the core subjects, upper secondary schools offer students the choice between 17 different academic programs. The purpose is to prepare students through the ages of 16 to 20 for college and university, which are also partially government-funded.

History Modern Sweden started out of the Kalmar Union formed in 1397 and by the unification of the country by King Gustav Vasa in the 16th century. In the 17th century Sweden expanded its territories to form the Swedish empire. Most of these conquered territories had to be given up during the 18th century. In the early 19th century Finland and the remaining territories outside the Scandinavian Peninsula were lost. After its last war in 1814, Sweden entered into a personal union with Norway which lasted until 1905. Since 1814, Sweden has been at peace, adopting a non-aligned foreign policy in peacetime and neutrality in wartime.
