Urbanisation of Asia/Pacific • In 1976, only 1/3rd of the world population was urban • In the past 30 years nearly 1.8 billion people were added to urban population with ASIA accounting for 47% • Today (2005) nearly half of the population of some 6.4 billion are living in cities & towns • By 2050 Asia region will account for 30% of estimated 5 billion world urban population • Asia’s urban growth will be 4 times that of the Europe & North America – coming 25 years • Over next 25 years the region will experience an increase in urban population of almost 750 million
