  3. Warm Up WHY SHOULDN’T ALL AMERICANS HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE?

  4. Learning Target I can trace and describe the major goals and accomplishments of the Women’s Suffrage Movement.

  5. Background • Before 1919, women could not vote, • The campaign for women’s suffrage began during the 1820s. • Woman’s role in society increased. • Women began demanding the same rights as men; including the right to vote! WHY WOULD HAVING THE RIGHT TO VOTE BE SO IMPORTANT?

  6. Historical Investigation • Use the primary sources to research how suffrage developed. • Create a timeline. • Decide on some possible solutions • Decide if the government should get involved in this problem.

  7. Ticket out the Door • The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. • Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. Put your name on a 3x5 card and write what these quotes mean.

  10. Learning Target I can analyze and evaluate how people felt about woman’s suffrage.

Text on Text Group Talk • This is a silent activity you will write on the pictures/quotes then pass them to the next member of the group. • Respond to the quotes and political cartoons by writing an answer to the following question: Was the author or cartoonist for or against suffrage? Include your reasons. • You may also respond to another group member’s comment by telling if you agree or disagree to what they wrote and why.

Which principle of government supports the issue concerning suffrage? (Individual Rights, Federalism, States Rights, Pop. Sovereignty, etc.) • What effects has the suffrage movement had on Texans since 1920?
