What we will learn today • We will talk about how you can set the good example and teach your family and friends about fire safety so they can be fire safe themselves
We have already learned that: • Most people die from smoke inhalation and heat. • If you have a fire in your home, it is very important to get out immediately before the smoke and heat have a chance to limit your chances of survival.
What is an “advocate”? • Someone who is in favor of something or speaks or writes in support of it. • Someone who teachers others about something • Can you be an advocate? • Absolutely • Practicing fire safety in your home and looking for fire hazards before they become dangerous.
Since cooking and smoking are leading causes of fires in the homes, how can you be an advocate to prevent those types of fires?
Cooking • Keep small children out of the kitchen when mom or dad is cooking. Why? • Remind mom and dad that pot handles should be turned inward. Why? • Remind mom and dad that towels and pot holders should not be on or around the stove. Why? • Remind mom and dad that they should never leave food cooking on the stove unattended. Why?
Smoking • if you have someone in your home that smokes: • Check furniture often for dropped cigarettes • Make sure mom or dad use a large, tip-proof ashtray. Why should you never use dishes, cans or cups as ashtrays? • When emptying ashtrays, make sure the contents are not still smoldering. How can you make sure the contents are safe to empty? • After large gatherings at your home, check to make sure there are no lit cigarettes that have fallen onto furniture or into waste baskets. • Remind mom and dad to keep all matches and lighters picked up and put away.
Remember to take home all of the fire safety information you received in school to show your mom and dad so they can learn about fire safety too!
