Agreeing on the facts

Agreeing on the facts. “Whether then it was I or they, so we preached and so you believed” (I Cor. 15:11). Truth Is Truth. No matter who presents it. But sometimes we attach ourselves to the one who presents it, and not to the truth. Some are smooth, eloquent.

  1. Agreeing on the facts “Whether then it was I or they, so we preached and so you believed” (I Cor. 15:11).

  2. Truth Is Truth • No matter who presents it. • But sometimes we attach ourselves to the one who presents it, and not to the truth. • Some are smooth, eloquent. • Some are attractive, magnetic. • A human problem – I Cor. 1:11f • My list of the 10 best preachers in the country... • Sometimes we place them above Jesus!

  3. Rationalizing Authority • WE all do it – from tax codes to driving laws. • Paul may be an apostle – but most of his teaching is just his own peculiarity – Eph. 5:22ff; I Cor. 14:34 • We justify our rightness by downplaying truth, and join ourselves to someone more lenient. • But what if all the apostles agree with each other?

  4. Agreement! • And they did. Peter and Paul agree. James and Jude agree with Peter and Paul. Even John agrees. • “Christianity from the doctrinal viewpoint consists of certain facts that, like foundation stones, sustain the whole weight of the edifice of faith. Its distinctive creed is primarily a proclamation of those facts. They were the substance of the apostles’ teaching and, if they were disproved, the foundation of religion would crumble.”

  5. Back to Basics • Jesus is Lord – I Cor. 1:10 • He was crucified for you – 2:2 • He was raised – 15:3-4 • He has expectations for our morality – 5:1; 6:9-12 • He demands and deserves our focus – 11:23ff • We need to unite as part of His body – 12:12-13. • He didn’t come to earth just so we could have Easter and Christmas!

  6. Now, Believe Your Beliefs • Jesus gave His life to establish a Faith. Not Judaism or Islam or a wishy-washy Protestantism. • Starbucks sells a “decaf, non-fat, soy latte.” They call it a “Why Bother?” Is your faith a “Why bother” faith? • Paul died because of his proclamation of Christ. So did Peter. It was that important to them. • Every Christian should submit our self totally to Him. James and Jude did – His brothers. • 2 Cor. 4:13
