Explosive growth in educational programs through asynchronous mode>>Advances in internet and IT>>Changing demographics of students>>Time management and travel>>Ability to enroll more students/revenue World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
The College of Engineering at the University of Michigan – Dearborn Campus is located in the midst of large engineering corporations. It provides educational opportunities to full-time and practicing engineers from industry who attend classes late afternoons and evenings. Most of the classes in our Master’s degree programs are offered late afternoons and evenings., thus facilitating engineers to upgrade their engineering education and technical competency. World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
The College decided to offer graduate degree programs through DL network because:>>Driving distance and time conservation>>Some engineers travel out-of-state/country>>International students from outside U.S.>> Engineers get transferred from local area>>Enroll in two courses offered at the same time World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012

Concerns>> Students do not get the same experience>> Different assessment of students>> Lack of interaction between students>> Inadequate learning facilities>> DL students perform at lower levels>> Lower quality of DL programs and students World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
Lower quality of programs ?. No course/class is offered unless it is offered to on-campus students. DL students register for the same class/course but different section. Live presentation is video taped and available to DL students via streaming video. Lecture notes are made available to all students – DL and on-campus students via Virtual Learning Tool (VLT) World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
VLT screen World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
Different assessment of DL students ?. Same notes, text and reference books. Same tests and assignments as on-campus. Grading is done along with on-campus students World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
Other issues ?.Library facilities available – evenings, weekends, and internet based loans of books and papers. Virtual office hours and chat rooms weekly. DL students are free to attend on-campus class. Interaction with students through team projects depending on course World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
Goal of the investigationThe major goal of the project was to evaluate and compare performance of DL and on-campus students over several years World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012

The investigation was carried out using the preset requirements of our DL programs>>Same assignments to both groups>>Same tests to both groups>>Mixing tests and assignments while grading>>Identical projects to both groups>>Same timeline for completion World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
Students in the DL section are free to take tests with on-campus students or under a supervision of a proctor within 24 hours of on-campus test World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012

The results of evaluation are based on >> Data from two graduate courses >> Courses in mechanical engineering >> Students from 3 graduate programs participate>> One coursehas a lab demo or video with commentary on lab demo (for DL students)>> Data collected over a 5-year period. Project.Team project – 2 students, in general. Team generally made up of one DL and one in-class. Different projects to groups. Projects deal with simulation. Requires critical thinking and interpretation. Team can work through VLT, internet, e-mail World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012

Continuous improvementWe are continuously striving to improve our teaching and students’ learning. To achieve this we try to seekfeedback from students every semester and make appropriate changes that are deemed important. We seek input on course material and presentation to in-class and DL students and how course instructor performs from the point of in-class and DL students. World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
1. Did this course fulfill your educational needs?2. Were there clear course objectives indicated?3. Were the prerequisites for this course adequate?4. Did you find this course challenging and engaging?5. Were the notes and presentation adequate to understand the material?6. Was the graphic portion of the material adequate?7. Was the lab demo and video designed to understand and support course material?8. Was the audio portion of the streaming video adequate to understand the instructor?9. Was there unnecessary repetition of material? ** Suggestions on improving course presentation World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
1. Was the instructor prepared for in-class and DL?2. Were the course materials appropriately organized for in-class and DL students?3. Did the instructor provide proper presentation of the course subject matter?4. Did the instructor present the material in a format appropriate for in-class and DL students?5. Did the examinations provide an accurate means for students to demonstrate their mastery?6. Did the instructor provide timely feedback with regard to assignments/tests to both the groups?7. Did the course assignments and tests provide an accurate means to show your comprehension? World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012

The approach we have used of integrating in-class and DL delivery has resulted in very little difference in the quality of learning between on-campus and DL students. However, the success of DL program isenhanced if. Students are well disciplined and use adequate time management approach.. Well developed and planned instructional activities on the part of the instructor including semester long schedule on topics, assignments, tests, etc. World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
.Periodic contact with DL students is essential for the success . Timely feedback from all students but more so from DL students World Engineering Education Forum, BA, Argentina, Oct 15-18, 2012
