COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT • Things to note: • The principles to be discussed this week fall mainly in the implementation phase of a CHD program. • List of principles presented is not exhaustive or fixed • They are however tried and tested and have yielded good results • During participants online discussions, we expect that you discuss these principles in the context of your respective communities. COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Principle 5: Resource Mobilisation • Clear vision, objectives and activities • Project implementation runs on resources • Programmes must be cost-effective; to ensure this, cost and resource analysis must be discussed with community members • As far as possible resources (logistics and man-power) must be generated locally • Huge financial capital (seed money) can be sought externally. • Program sustainability is rooted in effective resource mobilisation By Dennis Penu

COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Issues for thought................ • Make an inventory of the resources that should be generated locally and those that should can be obtained externally ……….share them on the course wiki page • In your view how is resource mobilisation crucial for program sustainability? COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Principle 6: Skilled, motivated and committed Facilitators • Facilitators are the fore-runners in the project implementation. • They may be obtained already skilled or unskilled but willing to learn: if so, develop them • In a CHD program, facilitators are usually health workers By Dennis Penu

COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Principle 7: Skilled leadership • A good CHD Program must have a leader • Leadership could be by an individual or group (with a presiding member) • Leadership is very crucial especially during the developmental stages of the project. • And of course; leadership must be skilled and chosen to suit the program in question: read about a CHD program leader on page 19 ( Tearfund Series) By Dennis Penu

  9. COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Principle 8: Appropriate Activities • Activities in a CHD program should be tailored towards achieving the objectives of the program • Read about ASHA’s activities on page 20 (Tearfund series): take note of how they are linked to their goals By Dennis Penu

COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Principle 9: Efficient monitoring mechanisms and evaluation framework • For a sustainable CHD program, evaluation must be done together with community members. • It becomes a participatory, learning experience for everyone. • Let the people themselves say whether there is progress or not: they see it, they feel it, they hear it. COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Issues for thought… Read about an example of effective evaluation on page 31 (Tearfund series) …………………… Take a look at a sample evaluation scheme on page 45 (Tearfund series How is your project monitored or evaluated: share them on our Wiki Space. Other participants are free to comment on the strenghts and weaknesses of the ideas shared. By Dennis Penu
