COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT WELCOME TO WEEK 2 • Our objectives for this week include : • Understanding our first 5 principles of a good CHD programme • Discussing these principles in context of a case study CHD programme (ABCD) carried out by the Christian Outreach in Cambodia. By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT • Things to note: • These principles fall mainly in the planning stage of a CHD programme • List of principles presented is not exhaustive or fixed • They are however tried and tested and have yielded good results • During participants online discussions, we expect that you discuss these principles in the context of your respective communities. By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Principle 1: Clear Vision, Objectives and Activities • Clear vision, objectives and activities • Any project must start with the end in mind • Goals serve as guiding principles and are the standards by which progress is measured • It informs the plan, and helps in re-strategizing in cases of challenges • In the context of CHD, such objectives should aim at addressing the basis of the communities’ health problems By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Objectives could be Short-term (Immediate) or Long-term (Wider) • Wider objectives are not expected to be fulfilled in the life-time of the program • Immediate objectives should be in place by the end of the program. By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Issues for thought................ • Let’s take a look at the ABCD project (pages 13 &14 of the Tearfund Series report) and try identifying wider and immediate objectives of the project……….share your own ideas and experiences on the course wiki page By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT • The vision, goals, objectives and activities of a project are linked By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Principle 2: Assessment of Community Needs • This principle forms the main basis for the difference between traditional CH programs and the CHD program • The needs of the community help to craft your goals and activities; makes any progress sustainable; and generates community interest • Project goals must coincide with community needs ( As in the ABCD project) By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Principle 3: Focus on the Poor • A good CHD can be sustained when individual development is translated into community development • The poor are very vulnerable in society. They are the group that can easily fall into a relapse after progress has been made in a CHD program. • Therefore economic empowerment becomes necessary By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Benefits of economic empowerment include: • The people become self-reliant in promoting non-medical interventions that enhance health (e.g nutrition, abolishing unjust practices, assessing good water supply etc) • Women and children (also vulnerable) in society should be given special attention as well with respect to economic empowerment. By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Issues for thought…………….. • How do you identify the poor? • Why are they poor? • How do you empower them? • What impacts can such empowerment have?............... Find some answers to these questions in the Tearfund (Jahmkhed, page 25) Project and Share your alternative ideas on the course wiki space. By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Principle 4: Community Ownership • Build a relationship with the community and facilitate community organization • Community should be involved in: • Community needs assessment • Identification of problems and proposing solutions • Resource mobilization • Leadership • A partnership with the project organization By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT • Issues for thought • Why is community ownership important in CHD? • Find a case report in the Tear fund case study (ASHA project) (page 18) ………………. • Share your personal experiences or ideas on our course wiki page. By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Principle 5: Sharing of Skills to support Community development Community members should not be regarded as ignorant. They can manage and promote their own health if giving the necessary guidance By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT Issues for thought……….. A staff member of the Jahkmed project has said “all that I know the villagers can know; it is my responsibility to decide how to transfer my knowledge and values to them”…………………… Can you say this about your community, why so? Why not?.................let’s share these ideas on the course wiki page? By Dennis Penu
COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT LOOKING FOWARD The next sessions will focus on “more principles for good CHD” Let’s remember to submit our assignments and join in the discussions on our course page. Prepared By: Dennis Penu (Course Facilitator)
