  2. NPQH • The first choice qualification for aspiring Heads • Recognised by appointing bodies as the headship qualification • Supported and subsidised by Government • Revised model 2012 linked to national competencies and development through modular curriculum

NPQH Model Phases • Gateway Assessment – NPAP is the national commissioned provider for this phase • Development Phase – This will be delivered by 29 licensed providers around the country and is built on the principles of self-sustaining school development and improvement • Final Assessment – A different national provider for this phase is to be commissioned

  8. Development Phase • In order to present for final assessment trainee heads will need to have completed the following: • 3 essential modules • 2 elective modules • 9 -10 day placement • In addition, licensees may offer additional activities such as coaching.

Scholarships & Subsidies • Scholarships • Eligibility criteria based • Values based on eligibility (Max £2,375) • Maintained sector standard school (Max c£1500) • Capped number of scholarships (c1300) • No cap on programme numbers (for full paying participants) • National College will fund: • Initial gateway assessment • Final assessment for all trainee heads within the maintained sector.

  12. Application sections (1) Section 1 Readiness for Headship • In this section demonstrate your readiness for headship. Please provide your best two recent examples of senior leadership roles/work experiences where you have led at whole school/organisation level and explain how they demonstrate your readiness for headship. You should include quantified evidence of your main achievements in these roles (i.e. your personal impact and the positive difference your work has had in the organisation and on meeting its goals) to justify that your next job will be headship. Please ensure you describe briefly the senior leadership roles/work experiences you have chosen and give the dates. (500 Words)

Application sections (2) Section 2 Self awareness and self management • In this section please provide evidence of how you have planned your development to prepare yourself for headship and to develop the technical knowledge required for the role. You should demonstrate your self awareness and self-management, say how you have improved your leadership as a result and provide evidence of how your performance has actually improved. In addition, please identify two aspects of your leadership that you consider you need to develop further on NPQH and to say why you have identified these areas. (500 Words)

Application sections (3) Section 3  Delivering continuous improvement • Please give an example of leading at whole school or organisational level in which you can demonstrate delivering continuous improvement to deliver your vision for the school through strategic planning and engaging stakeholders. Ensure you provide evidence of the impact and positive difference you made. (500 Words)

Application sections (4) Section 4 Modelling Excellence in Teaching/Learning Focus • Please give an example of leading at whole school or organisational level in which you can demonstrate improving teaching and learning through modelling excellence in teaching and learning focus for all members of the school community. Ensure you provide evidence of the impact and positive difference you made. (500 Words)

Application sections (5) Section 5 Efficient and Effective • Please give an example of an initiative/activity you led at whole school or organisational level in which you can demonstrate you are efficient and effective in managing all school/organisation structures, resources and processes. Choose an example which covers more than one aspect of the competency. Ensure you provide evidence of the impact and positive difference you made. (500 Words)

Application sections (6) Section 6 Personal Drive and Accountability • Please give an example of an initiative/activity you led at whole school or organisational level in which you can demonstrate your personal drive and accountability in taking responsibility and bringing it to a successful conclusion. Ensure you provide evidence of the impact and positive difference you made. (500 Words)

Sponsor • Usually your Head • Agreement to support your NPQH journey • School funding where required • Time to engage in NPQH • Written submission for each application section – needed to make the application complete • 30 minute telephone interview with assessor to provide further evidence of competencies for those reaching the second stage of the process
