2. Aims To understand the Training/Teaching framework of qualifications

3. Initial assessment How much do you know about the new qualifications?
4. Mandatory – for whom? – From September 2007 all new teachers in the post-16 (Learning and Skills) sector have been required to work towards Qualified Teacher Status – Learning and Skills (QTLS).
The training required depends on the ‘role’ of the teacher.
5. Mandatory – for whom? – For those in employment with their current employer as a teacher prior to September 2007 - Not required but encouraged as a demonstration of currency of teaching practice
6. The associate teacher role This is defined by LLUK as carrying fewer teaching responsibilities than the full role, but the quality of teaching is expected to be of an equally high standard.
7. The associate teacher role Someone is deemed to be in an Associate Teacher Role if their role and responsibilities are to teach predominantly in at least one of the following ways:
from packs/pre-prepared materials, and therefore has fewer responsibilities in design of curriculum and materials
on a one to one basis
a programme confined to a particular level/subject/type of learner
8. The full teacher role
This is defined by LLUK as all those entering the profession who take on the full responsibilities of a teacher in the Learning and Skills sector. This is performed by someone who teaches:
using materials they have designed and evaluated
across a range of levels, subjects and learner types
across or contributes to a range of programmes of varying lengths
candidates have five years in which to achieve QTLS
9. Qualifications structure Three main courses – two qualifications
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) (7303)
Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) (7304)
Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) (7305 or HEI)
10. Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) (7303) 30 hours contact time No observations of real practice 30 minute Micro-teaching session Covers the basics of teaching, assessment, planning lessons and schemes of work. Not a qualification
