The importance of technical writing • As a technical professional, you will have the opportunity to perform many function: research, design, analyze, manufacture or construct, test and manage. • In the performance of these functions, many technologist, engineers and scientists new to the work environment discover that they may spend as much as 50% of their time writing reports and documents that discuss the result of their work.

Business letters, memos, and e-mail : are foundation for conveying information in business • Periodic, progress and trip report : communicate progress on projects and event to those concern with their completion dan succsess • Personal evaluation : review the past performance of employees to foster better working relationships between employees and employers

  11. Deterministic report • Report that discuss occurrences determined by previous event • Study and evaluate existing fact, data and concept

Technical articles : disseminate technical information to interested professionals and colleagues • Laboratory report : may be one component of a research project or may demonstrate technical capability • Scientific and engineering analyses : are mathematical evaluations of scientific and technical system.

  13. Research reports : communicate the result of scientific and sociotechnologic investigation to help understand scientific and sociotechnologic phenomena. These report may include analytical as well as laboratory component.

Audience Understanding the perspective of your audience is the key to writing effectively The reader of your report will fall into one or more of the following categories. • Executives : conclusion to make decisions • Technologies, engineers, and scientists : information transfer and understanding for action
