  4. Hardware and software2 • What’s a hardware? • Part of a computer with physical structures • Monitor, keyboard, motherboard, etc • What’s a software? • Tells hardware what to do • Microsoft Office, web browsers, computer games, etc

  5. Desktop and laptop computers2 • What is a desktop computer? • A computer placed on a desk • Includes a monitor, PC, keyboard, mouse (not connected) • What is a laptop computer? • A portable computer • Includes everything a DC has but just put together

  6. Servers2 • Serves information for other computers • For example: • Facebook has servers to store information • Google and Youtube also does

  7. Mobile phones2 • Nowadays, more applications • Internet • Playing games • These are called smartphones

  8. Game consoles2 • Specifically used to play video games • Some also allows internet connection • Multiplayer • For example, XBOX 360, Nintendo DS, PS3

  10. applications2 • What is an application • It’s a software used for specific tasks • Examples: • Recording • Camera • Games

  11. os2 • What is an OS? • Operating System • A software that programs what the computer does • For examples: • Windows XP • Windows 7

  12. The cloud2 • What is a cloud? • The Internet • Specifically- anything you access on the web • What happens when you store info on the cloud? • Stored on servers

  13. moving files2 • On Windows: • Windows Easy Transfer • On Mac: • Migration Assistant

  14. Setting your computers up2 • Nothing needed for laptops • Desktop computer parts- • Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Computer Case, (printer) • Connect all the hardware ports • Plug power supply cables into the surge protector • Plug your adaptor into your socket

  15. Virus and malware 12 • What is a virus? • An “infection” • Spread from computer to computer • Spread on the cloud • The “Trojan Horse”

  17. How to maintain it2 • Don’t have this  • Keep it clean • Work in a good work space • No liquids near it • Antivirus
