Leading with Openness & VulnerabilityBishop Keith and Donna’s story
Love is an Orientation Possible Scenario Ask yourself: What would Jesus need to change in me, or provide for me, so that I would be ready to serve in this scenario? At the invitation of one of your church members, Craig and Rick visited your church a couple of months ago. They enjoyed the fellowship and atmosphere, and have many questions about spiritual things. After two or three sporadic visits, they have attended the last three weeks in a row. Craig and Rick were married in a gay-affirming church two years ago and together they are raising Rick’s two daughters, who he had in a previous marriage.
To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable. C.S. Lewisfrom his book, “The Four Loves”
Jesus Commands us to Love • One another- John 13: 34 So now I am giving you a new commandment.: Love each other. Just as I have love you, you should love each other. • God- Matthew 22:37-38 Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. • your neighbour and yourself – Matthew 22: 39: “A second is equally important: Love your neighbour as yourself.” • your enemy- Matthew 5: 43-35: “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbour’ and hate your enemy. But I say love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. ..” Who is left NOT to love?
