Gates Annual Letter • By Bill and Melinda Gates • Disproving 3 myths: • Poor countries are doomed to stay poor • Foreign aid is a waste • Saving lives causes overpopulation
Myth 1: Poor countries stay poor • But they haven’t!
Nairobi 1969 2009
Shanghai 1978 2012
African Countries • Incomes increase $1,300 to $2,200 since 1998 • Live expectancy – 41 to 57 (since 1960)
Gates Prediction • By 2035, no more poor countries
Myth 2: Foreign aid is a waste • What percent foreign aid?
Health • $11 billion • < $5,000 to save a child
But countries get dependent… • Not true! • Countries that no longer get aid: Botswana, Morocco, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Thailand, Mauritius, Singapore, and Malaysia
Myth 3: Saving lives overpopulation • “We make the future sustainable when we invest in the poor, not when we insist on their suffering.” • Most deaths = more births • “When you save lives, you save the planet too.”
“We make decisions based on the circumstances we face.” • Nourishment and vaccinations and treatments of diseases matter • Women’s empowerment
Myths Disproved • Poor countries don’t stay poor • Foreign aid makes a huge difference • Lower mortality means lower fertility
What we can do? • Tell leaders you support foreign aid • Know donations make a difference • Debunk the myths – explain to skeptical people
Not Time to Celebrate Yet • Still have a great deal to do • Why GB exists • But hopefully won’t in the future
