High Schools That Work An Overview Dr. Carol Ann Duke Director, Schools That Work Arkansas High School
HSTW Goals • Raise math, science, communication, problem-solving, & technical achievement of more students to the national average & above • Blend the essential content of traditional college-prep studies (math, science, lang. arts) with quality career/technical studies by creating conditions that support school leaders, teachers, & counselors in carrying out key practices • Advance state & local policies and leadership initiatives necessary to sustain a continuous school-improvement effort for both academic & career/technical studies
High Expectations Career/Technical Studies Academic Studies Program of Study Work-based Learning Teachers Working Together Students Actively Engaged Guidance Extra Help Keeping Score HSTW Key Practices
There is really only ONE Key Practice: Setting Higher Expectations and getting more students to meet them. And there are 9 HSTW suggestions of how to get there… Honestly,
Career/Technical Studies Increasing access to intellectually challenging career/technical studies, with a major emphasis on using high-level math, science, language arts, and problem-solving skills in the modern workplace and in preparation for continued learning.
Academic Studies Increasing access to academic studies that teach the essential concepts from the college-prep curriculum by encouraging students to use academic content and skills to address real-world projects and problems.
Program of Study Having students complete a challenging program of study with an upgraded academic core and a major.
Work-based Learning Giving students and their parents the choice of a system that integrates school-based & work-based learning that spans high school & postsecondary studies and that is planned by educators, employers, and employees.
Teachers Working Together Having an organization, structure, and schedule giving academic and career/technical teachers the time to plan & deliver integrated instruction aimed at teaching high-level academic and technical content.
Students Actively Engaged Getting every student involved in rigorous and challenging learning.
Guidance Involving each student & his/her parents in a guidance and advisement system that ensures the completion of an accelerated program of study with an in-depth academic or career/technical major.
Extra Help Providing a structured system of extra help to enable students who may lack adequate preparation to complete an accelerated program of study that includes high-level academic and technical content.
Keeping Score Using student assessment & program evaluation data to improve continuously the school climate, organization, management, curricula, and instruction to advance student learning and to recognize students who meet both curriculum and performance goals.
What’s next? • See what you’re already doing to address key practices • Rely on schools in the HSTW network to see best practices at work • Realize that HSTW is NOT adding to your workload, it’s a new foundation of support for the work we’re required to do • Prepare for your TAV • Plan and prepare for HSTW/NAEP Assessment (January 2006)
HSTW/NAEP Assessment • ADWE provides grant to pay for assessment & provides training for Site Coordinator • Test 60 c/t completers • Tests in Reading, Math, & Science • Student Survey, Teacher Survey, & Transcript Study • Results are a 200+ page report
1st year site & Assessment • Don’t panic; if you don’t have 60 c/t completers, select other students to make up the difference • “Sell” the test to you’re the students involved • Assessment will provide a benchmark for future HSTW-related data needs
1st year site & Assessment • Ask for help – counselors, teachers, volunteers, and other site coordinators • Plan to attend any & all ADWE offered training • Documentation needs • Remember – there are NO stupid questions!
