Affects of quality water • Seasonal temperature changes, weathering of rock and soil, human activities, pollution, automobiles, deforestation, rain, and runoffs.
Pollution • Point source pollution- pollution that can be traced to one location such as a drain pipe or a smoke stack. • Non-point source pollution- pollution that can not be traced back to one location. (lawns, roads, urban areas).
Testing water quality • Dissolved oxygen- low=fish die, oxygen levels affected by chemicals which cause algae to grow.
Water temperature • Water temperature- as temperature increases the amount of oxygen increases.
Nitrates • Nitrates- nitrogen based compound often used in fertilizer. • Nitrates cause algae growth. Algae growth blocks light needed by plants, then plants die. When algae dies oxygen levels decrease.
Acidity • Acidity- strong acids or bases can be harmful to plants and animals.
Turbidity • Turbidity- the measure of cloudiness of water, from sediment, microscopic organisms or pollutions. • Amount of matter increases, turbidity increases! • Turbidity high- light penetration decreases • Turbidity measured with a secchi disk
Bioindicators • Bioindicators- an organism that is sensitive to environmental conditions and is one of the first to respond to changes.
Remote sensing • Remote sensing- collection of data from a distance
