READING! • Flexible Groups • Groups meet every day • Small group instruction includes reading as well as skill work. • Books are assigned according to reading ability. • Sight word study through word rings • Students are required to read their book EVERY night and bring it back to school EVERY day.
If your child is not at reading group they will be… • Working on a follow-up assignment from reading group. (independently) • This is a great time for volunteers!!! • “Centers” - Working around the room at various learning stations that review skills previously taught in class. • Phonics – independent practice of phonics skills, phonemic awareness, and other related skill work.
School Wide Behavior System • CIRCLE system – students will receive a circle if they are: inappropriate, disrespectful, disruptive, aggressive. • W – Warning - this is JUST a warning. • T – Time Out. You will get a note explaining why your child received a time out. • L – Letter. Your child will write a letter explaining what went wrong and how they can make better choices next time. • R – Referral. Student will be sent to the office and written up with a referral. • A – Automatic. Student will skip all the above steps and immediately get a referral. W T L R A
Card Colors for Behavior System • Green = Good day with only a Warning Circle or better! Homework completed and remembered reading book and word cards. • Yellow= Time-out. Child has already been given an official warning and continued to make poor choices. A Homework Yellow is a reminder. • Blue = Letter Home. Child has been given an official warning, time-out, and continued to make poor choices. • Red = Referral. Warning, time-out, and letter were in place and child needs to be removed from the classroom environment to speak with Mr. DeGrange. This would also be the case with an Automatic Referral.
Reward Philosophy • Character Counts! – ticket given to a child that shows remarkable character – above and beyond – will receive a certificate and a special reward from Mrs. Mitchell. • EAGLE TICKETS – Used to reward positive behavior. (Caught you being good!) • Children get to put their tickets in a can to be chosen for a school wide prize. • Prize Bin – Awarded to children who go above and beyond or have received a compliment from someone outside our classroom (Staff, Volunteers, etc.)
Homework Book and Folder • Please make sure books are signed every night (Monday - Thursday) • This lets us know you have reviewed the assignment and card color with your child. • The assignment should be completed by the child and checked by an adult. If your child is having difficulty, take some time to go over the assignment with them. • Reading assignment homework: Please listen to your child as they read. • HOMEWORK: should take about 15 minutes each night plus nightly reading. • No Homework on Fridays and weekends.
How can I help my child? • Read the Friday Notes and participate with your child. • Read with them every day. • Guide them when doing homework. • Reinforce good behavior at home • Be positive and show an interest in their work.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! • We celebrate un-birthdays for children who have summer birthdays! • Feel free to bring in individually wrapped treats. • Please bring enough for the entire class. (19 students this year and 1 hungry teacher ) • We sing “Happy Birthday” in the room and then share the treats in the cafeteria at lunch.
Feel free to write a note to your child. They can read it in the morning. (Pencils or crayons in their desks)Have a good evening!
