Improving 3GPP Portal Usability: Feedback and Recommendations

This project aims to gather and consolidate feedback on the usability and deficiencies of the 3GPP Portal tools. The analysis focuses on various tabs such as Meetings, T-Doc, Change Request, LS, Releases, Work Plan, and Specifications. The user feedback highlights the need for better organization, search functionalities, and user-centric design to enhance the overall user experience.

  1. What is the target? • To gather and consolidate requirements for improvements to be made to the 3GPP Portal and associated tools, and to present those requirements to the PCG. • A questionnaire was created requesting feedback on the usability and deficiencies of the 3GPP tools BUT, what tools are we talking about? • If we just stick to the Portal (3GU) – without a login ID – The outsider has 7 tabs facing him: • If these are the ‘tools’ – then the following slides are feedback from the perspective of a non expert user (3GPP Marketing officer) 1

  2. Using Portal ‘Meetings’ • This is a Registration tab, not a Meeting tab • How do I get RAN1 meeting info? (Advanced query goes to old ETSI Meeting App!) • Portal page gives less satisfaction than this web page:

  3. Using Portal ‘T-Doc’ • What is a T-Doc? The ‘Type’ drop down menu insufficient! • For ‘v2x’… 5209 contributions found (no filters) • ‘Meeting’ drop down is single meeting specific…so we cant search for RAN2 T-docs • Who understands the Status drop down menu, other than an insider!?

  4. Using portal ‘Change Request’ • What is a Change Request? • How to search for ‘v2x’ ? The Work item auto fill isn’t helpful • Not as good as Notovate CR search:

  5. Using the Portal LS tab • What is a liaison statement? • Only useful for a specific meeting.. But LS’s span across meetings and there needs to be a link to the LS-IN and the related LS-OUT and visa-versa • Need to go to web page for LS by organization: http://www.3gpp.org/about-3gpp/15-bodies-with-which-3gpp-has

  6. Using the Portal - Releases • Need to go to the web site for info about Releases • End date is not the ‘headline’ freeze date, so could create confusion. Some alignment needed on vocabulary

  7. Using the portal – Work Plan • What is a work plan? • This view is good, but the Excel sheet offers more flexibility

  8. Using the Portal - Specifications • What is ‘under change control’? • This view is good, but it would be useful to have sort by Series or TB or release …or a combo of those • It would be useful to be able to search in Scope (boolean search?)

  9. Comments on progress so far: • A user guide may help … but all of the tabs could be significantly improved by a more user centric approach to their design. Why bother writing a guide for a poor user interface, why not improve the user interface itself? • Shouldn’t any ‘consolidated information on a feature’ with information related to it...be on the web site – Under ‘Technologies’ BTW – This is the hardest bit…Journalists, analysts, non standards engineers…want an overview and a link to further reading…not a list of TR, TS, LS, Tdoc, CRs… • Should future web site and portal development START from the user perspective rather than thinking about non experts as an afterthought? 9
