Rouge Park:Wild in the City!Meeting with Minister Jeffrey, May 31 2010
Rouge Park is… • A major regional park in York and Durham Regions and Toronto, accessible by public transit throughout the GTA • An important natural, cultural and agricultural landscape in the Rouge River, Petticoat Creek and Duffins Creek watersheds. • Big, the largest natural environment park in an urban area in North America, (over 40 km2) and growing! • A major reservoir of biodiversity in Ontario’s Greenbelt in York and Durham Regions and Toronto • A singular example of federal, provincial and local cooperation.
Strong Support from the McGuinty Government • Doubling the size of the Park • Special $2 million funding • Strong support from local MPPs • Strong leadership from provincial reps MPPs Duguid and Jaczek • Excellent working relationship with MNR staff
Effort to Make Rouge Park a Federal Park • February 2010 StrategyCorp Report • Federal Park vs. Provincial Park • New federal lands to be added to Rouge Park • April 23 Rouge Park Alliance Meeting – unanimous support • Letter of support from Province
Federal Park – Next Steps • Talks with federal civil service and Ministers going well • Need senior MNR staff support during discussions • Challenge – Federal park designation could take up to 5 years, Rouge Park will require on-going financial support during this transition period • Challenge – if there is no progress on discussions with federal government by December 31, 2010 Rouge Park Alliance will need to seek a “Plan B” solution with the Province.
Good Work Still Proceeding in the Park • Solid progress in Bob Hunter Memorial Park • Development of new agricultural policies • Need for long-term leases for key farmers • Exciting near urban agri-food opportunities
