GRP Highlights • the data products (ISCCP, GPCP, GACP and SRB) are now available covering the period from the early 1980's to early this decade (slightly different dates for each but the common period is 1983-2001) and will be produced through 2003 by this summer; • a newlyrevised SeaFlux dataset is available covering 1989-2000; • GRP will now focus on preparing and releasing a combined data product, adding some datasets from others (GSWP and reanalyses); • This will result in a nearly "complete" description of the global energy and water cycle, resolving weather scale variations over a period of 10-15 years....

nd Global Soil Wetness Project Multi-model investigations into variability and predictability of the global surface water and energy cycles GSWP-2 represents an evolution in multi-model large-scale land-surface modeling with the following features: The ten year (1986-1995) length of the ISLSCP Initiative 2 allows for a better investigation of interannual land surface climate variability. The ISLSCP Initiative 2 data set will contain more than one rendition of many global fields, produced by different methods and scientists. This gives us a straightforward means to investigate LSS sensitivity to the choice of forcing data sets. Application and further development of the methods of calibration and validation of LSSs with in situ and remote sensing data. This project will produce a model based estimate of the global continental water fluxes with estimates for the errors linked to the modelling and the forcing fields

Validation II There will be three main modes of in situ validation of participating LSMs: Streamflow – Runoff fluxes from LSSs will be routed with river models to compare with streamflow measurements across a large portion of the globe. This analysis can also uncover problems in the forcing data at basin scales. For large basins, comparison of water storage change with analysed moisture convergence are possible.
