shape • Shape implies spatial form and is usually perceived as two-dimensional. • Organic/Geometric
form • Form has depth, length, and width and resides in space. It is perceived as three-dimensional.
color • Colors all come from the three primaries and black and white. They have three properties – hue, value, and intensity.
color • hue: name of color • value: the lightness or darkness of color • intensity: the brightness or dullness of a color
color • primary colors • red, yellow, blue • secondary colors • green, orange, violet (purple) • tertiary colors • yellow-green, yellow-orange, red-orange, red-violet, blue-green, blue-violet
color • color scheme: a planned combination of colors • complementary colors: colors that are across from each other on the color wheel • analogous colors: colors that are next to each other on the color wheel • monochromatic: the use of only one color in a work, will include various values and intensities of that color • warm colors: reds, oranges, some yellows • cool colors: blues, violets, greens, some yellows
value • Value refers to relative lightness and darkness and is perceived in terms of varying levels of contrast.
texture • Texture refers to the tactile qualities of a surface (actual) or to the visual representation of such surface qualities (implied).
space • Space refers to the area in which art is organized.
