Example of applying ergonomics in our life : • Adjust the height of your work surface or table. • Use a well-designed chair that supports your back and can be adjusted in height and tilt • Position the keyboard appropriately so that it allows your forearms to be in line with your hands. • Adjust your seat to allow your eyes to be at comfortable level with the screen. • Place a document holder close to the computer screen to help you reduce the movement of your head. • Do not sit in a rigid and stiff manner, change your posture frequently.
Identifying Computer Usage that Affect Physical Health • Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI) • can occur due to prolonged use of the hand, causing a number of symptoms such as pain, burning, swelling, tingling, numbness, loss of dexterity and weakness. • RSI is also known by other names, such as Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS), Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD), and Repetitive Motion Syndrome (RMS).
Back Pain • Back pain can happen when you sit on a chair for a long period of time. It may also worsened an existing back or neck problem. • Usually when you sit in front of a computer, you are putting yourself in a static posture. This is increase pressure on your back, neck, shoulders, arms and legs as well as back muscles and spinal discs.
Eye Strain • Your eye can also become strained when you work in a place with bad lighting conditions; a lot of glare or with a flickering screen.
Social Problem Associated with Computer and Internet Use Below are some of the social problems : • Exposure to online predators • Pornography addiction • Neglecting family and friends • Sleep disorder • Compulsive online shopping or online gambling • Online gaming addiction
Proper Recycling and Disposing of Computer Equipment • Use only when Necessary • Purchase a monitor that does not consume so much power while it is inactive. If you need to leave it for a period of time, switch off your computer rather than leaving it on standby.
Donate • Donate your computer to somebody who can benefit from it such as to a local charity. Remember to physically damage the hard disk so that the new owners will not be able to retrieve its sensitive content
Recycle • Recycle your old computers as well as printer ink cartridges and toners. • If your old computer is damaged beyond repair or is no longer fit for use, take it to the local recycling centre. If possible, send it directly to the computer recycling section.
