Computer vs Health • Health is Wealth
What? e-Health Health definition • the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit; especially: freedom from physical disease or pain Electronic definition • being a medium (as television) by which information is transmitted electronically
How? e-Health • Eye strain • Back pain • Repetitive Strain Injuries
Eye Strain Prevention & Solutions: • Use monitors which don't flicker • Have blinds at the windows so that the sun doesn't shine directly on the screen • Use suitable lights that disperse light evenly and don't shine on the screen • Use a screen filter • Keep your eyes at least 18 inches from the screen • Regularly look away from the screen and focus on something in the distance • Take regularly breaks - at least 5 minutes break every hour • Have regular eye tests and wear glasses if prescribed
Back Pain Some of the things that people can do to help avoid back pain are: • Use a fully adjustable chair. The height of the chair and the seat position should be easy to change. • Use footrests so that the legs are kept at a more natural angle • Use a monitor which is adjustable. Position it so that the neck doesn't have to bend • Take regular breaks and walk about. • Sit with the back straight and the head up, don't slouch
Repetitive Strain Injuries.. Symptoms in the arms and hands: • Aching • pain in arms/wrists even after rest • weakness • swelling • tenderness • numbness • pins and needles or burning sensation Symptoms in the shoulders and neck: • stiffness • aching
Ergonomics • Ergonomics is the study of fitting the job to the worker rather than the worker to the job.
Ergonomics.. • Elbow measures - Begin by sitting comfortably as close as possible to your desk so that your upper arms are parallel to your spine. Rest your hands on your work surface (e.g. desktop, computer keyboard). If your elbows are not at a 90-degree angle, adjust your computer chair height either up or down.
Ergonomics.. • Thigh measure - Check that you can easily slide your fingers under your thigh at the leading edge of the computer chair. If it is too tight, you need to prop your feet up with an adjustable footrest. If you are unusually tall and there is more than a finger width between your thigh and the chair, you need to raise the desk/work surface so that you can raise the height of your computer chair.
Ergonomics.. • Calf measure - With your bottom against the chair back, try to pass your clenched fist between the back of your calf and the front of your computer chair. If you can’t do that easily, then the computer chair is too deep. You will need to adjust the backrest forward, insert a low back support (such as a lumbar support cushion, a pillow or rolled up towel), or get a new computer chair.
Ergonomics.. • Low back support- Your bottom should be pressed against the back of your chair, and there should be a cushion that causes your lower back to arch slightly so that you don’t slump forward or slouch down in the chair as you tire. This low back support in the computer chair is essential to minimize the load (strain) on your back. Never slump or slouch in the computer chair, as that places extra stress on the structures in the low back and in particular on the lumbar discs.
Ergonomics.. • Resting eye level - Close your eyes while sitting comfortably with your head facing forward. Slowly open your eyes. Your gaze should be aimed at the center of your computer screen. If your computer screen is higher or lower than your gaze, you need to either raise or lower it to reduce neck strain.
The Environment As a computer user, can do to help reduce the impact on our environment: • Recycle paper for printing. If you are printing out non essential documents, print on the back of old paper. If the paper can no longer be used put it into a recycling bin. • Don't print unless absolutely necessary. Read your documents on the screen. Pass them onto others in an electronic format. • Recycle your old printer ink cartridges and toners
The Environment.. • Use a monitor that consumes less power whilst the computer is inactive • If you are not going to be using your computer for a period of time, switch it off and don't just leave it on standby. • Recycle your computer. Just because you want a new computer doesn't mean to say that your old one is worthless. Pass your computer onto someone else and don't just take it to the tip. If you really can't pass it on, then take it to your local tip and make sure that it goes to the specific computer recycling section.
