Confucianism (孔夫子) • Founded by “Kung Fuzi” • Europeans called him Confucius • Born into lower ranking family • Rose to prominence through education • Record keeper for late Zhou Dynasty • Became saddened as different states started fighting • Wished to return to the way of the great traditions and leaders of the past • Opened his own school at age of 22 • Taught that all people all good, but should always strive to be better • Believed in strong relationships and morality • ANALECTS = his writings that his students copied down after his death • This book is the basis of Confucianism
Confucianism Beliefs (Confucian Extras on Information Page) • Believed that man was naturally good • Encouraged Ancestor Worship • Concerned with harmonious relationships between individual people • Universal Virtues: • 1) courtesy, 2) wisdom, and 3) benevolence (morality) • Striving for virtue/education/politeness will create a stable society • Rulers must be educated and moral • Must be able to lead by example
