One of the most important God’s in Norse mythology • Freyr was known for weather, farming, and as a phallic fertility God. • He brings peace and pleasure to mortals. • Freyr is known to also be related and have ancestors from Sweden and been seen as an ancestor of the Swedish royal house. • He is the son of the sea God Njoror, and brother of the goddess Freyja. • He owns the village of Elves and rides a dwarf- made boar wherever he goes. • Freyr fell in love with Jotunn Geror, eventually she does become his wife although he has to give away his magic sword which fights on its own. • Although deprived of this weapon, Freyr defeats the jotunn Beli with an antler. However, lacking his sword, Freyr will be killed by the fire jötunn Surtr during the events of Ragnarok.

Domain – Part of the Esir/ leader of Asgrad, which is in Vahalla • Relations -Married to Frigg, Father of Thor Baldur and Bous • Represents war, battle, victory, death, wisdom, magic, prophecy, poetry and the hunt • Intrestin fact - Scarified himself to give his people the ability to write using runes • Flaws – would give anything in the pursuit of knowledge

INFORMATION • The god of light, joy, purity, beauty, innocence, and reconciliation • Son of Odin and Frigg, wife was Nanna daughter of Nep, and their son was Forseti, the god of justice • He was loved by both gods and men and was considered to be the best of the gods • Had little power • Loki tricked Balder’s blind brother Hod into throwing a mistletoe fig at him and that killed him

  9. Heimdall • God of Sentries- a guard • He was the guardian of the Gods • No flaws • He has a Gjallarhorn • He has golden teeth, he was the son of nine mothers

  11. Who is Tyr? • God of combat, victory, and heroic glory • Known as the invincible warrior of Nordic Patheon • Gungnir, Odin’s magic spear, may have once belonged to Tyr • Sacrificed his right hand to bind Fenrir, the wolf, who is set free, is destined to devour the sun.

  13. God of Poetry • Odin’s son • Provide entertainment and enlightnment to royal courts • Likely named after Bragi Boddason, a court poet who served Swedish kings • Often depicted in Valhalla, greeting the sould of the newly departed

Gefion • Norse Mythology • Female goddess associated with ploughing, foreknowledge, and virginity. • Goddess of unmarried women • Had four oxen sons by a giant, they pulled her ploughs • Name is said to mean, “the giving one” • Married Odin’s son, Skjold • Settled in Leire, Denmark. • Created the island of Zealand from Sweden.

  22. Mjölnir (Thor’s Hammer) The Mjölinir is the most fearsome weapon of Norse mythology and more commonly know as Thor’s hammer (wielder of this weapon). Capable of leveling mountains. Svartalfar Sindri created the hammer in competition with Loki Overall best weapon ever created!

  26. Fjorgyn • Mother of Thor and Meili • Her name represents “earth” • Speculated to also be the same goddess as Jörð.

Hel • Hel- is a being who has a realm of the same name and receives a portion of the dead • Daughter of Loki • Appointed by the ruler Odin where she realms in Niflheim • “Go to hel” –is to die • Half black, half flesh color • Rules over enormous mansions • Played a key role in the resurrection of God Baldr • Hel is mentioned numerous times in the Poetic Edda

  32. Info • Group of gods associated with fertility, wisdom. • They lived in Vanaheim (Vanaheimr or Vanaland), the world of the Vanir • The three of the Vanir are - Njord, Freyr and Freyja. • Have the ability to see the future.

  34. Skadi • Skadi or Skaoi • Goddess of hunting, skiing, winter and mountains • Her father Pjazi was killed by the gods • She married Ullr after breaking up with Njoror the sea god • Ullr and Skadi had many children

  36. lived in Asgard • god of mischief and lies. • also often associated with fire, and even sometimes evil in general • To help him in his tricks, he could transform himself into lots of different shapes • Symbol of Loki is Serpent (Snake) • Shape-changer and Trickster - the clever god as flexible as a serpent in wriggling out of trouble • Mother (Laufey) and Father (Farbauti) were both giants • Wife #1 Angrboda, #2 Sigyn • Had children- one was Hel who eventually became the ruler of the underworld • Just for fun, Loki tricks Balder's blind twin, Hod, into killing him with a spear made of mistletoe.

  38. Aegir • God of the ocean and king of the sea creatures • Son of the giant Fornjotr • Wife- Ran (sea goddess) • Had 9 daughters • Also known for hosting elaborate parties for the gods • Associated with the brewing of Ale • Thor was bitter towards Aegir for several years but he got over it

  40. Frigga • Queen of Asgard • Wife of the god Odin • A sky goddess responsible for weaving the clouds and fates • Knew the future but couldn’t change it • Goddess of child birth and fertility

Ymir • Domain: Founder of the race of the frost giants • Relationships: Sweat under his arms became two more giants and one of his legs mated with the other to create a third, a son Thrudgelmir. These were the forebearers of the family of frost giants or jutuns • Problems with other mortals: Borr’s three sons, Vili, Odin and Ve killed Ymir • Character Flaws: Is Dead • Fascinating Fact: When he died, Odin and his brothers used Ymir’s body to create the universe. His bones became the mountains and his teeth became rocks and pebbles. His brain is the clouds.

  43. Nidhogg Or Níðhöggr

Is a dragon/serpent • Also known as malice striker or corpse eater • Gnaws at the roots of the world tree, called Yggdrasill • It is believed that the roots of Yggdrasill are keeping Nidhogg from the world • It along with other serpents attack the roots of the tree gnawing at them to tear it down to be released from the underworld • Nidhogg bickers with the eagle and squirrel that live in the top of the tree • Is said to be the evil that faces the good

  46. Domain-Hermóðr is known as The Brave. Also known as the “war spirit” Relationship- The son of god Odin Problem-Hermóðr agreed to go to Hel and offer to bring back Baldr because many people wept for him after he died Flaws- He isn’t always aware of facts. For example Hermóðr rode Odin's horse Sleipnir for nine nights through deep and dark valleys to the Gjöll bridge covered with shining gold, the bridge being guarded by the maiden Móðguðr'Battle-frenzy‘. Móðguðr told Hermóðr that Baldr had already crossed the bridge and that Hermóðr should ride downwards and northwards Fascinating Fact-Baldr gave Hermóðr the ring Draupnir which had been burned with him on his pyre, to take back to Odin
