The Beatles: • In 1957 Paul McCartney met John Lennon and joined his group, the Quarrymen. George Harrison joined them in February of 1958. The played gigs occasionally at a club known as The Casbah. They were later joined by singer Stuart Sutcliffe and drummer Peter Best whose own mother owned the very club they played at.
The Early Band Years: • Early beginnings of the band included The Quarrymen, Johnny & the Moon Dogs, and The Silver Beetles. John Lennon created the band's final name, The Beatles, a mix of beat with beetle.
The Band And Managers: • They were hired by singer Tony Sheridan as a back up band for his recordings for the German Polydor label. Brian Epstein was made the manager of The Beatles in November of 1961. He changed their early image for the good
First Big-time Showbiz: • Epstein canceled the contract with the German label and with Tony Sheriden in 1962. In September of 1962 The Beatles recorded their first hit Love Me Do, and reached the top of the US singles chart in 1964.
Genres? • They played rock-n-roll and R&B-based pop songs while they gradually worked on developing a style of their own. Their mixture of rock-n-roll, skiffle, blues, country, soul, and a simplified version of 1930s jazz resulted in several multi-genre and cross-style sounding songs.
Talents: • George Harrison played the lead guitar and also introduced such exotic instruments as ukulele, Indian sitars, flutes, tabla, darbouka, and tampur drums. John Lennon played a variety of guitars, keyboards, harmonicas and horns. Paul McCartney played bass guitar, acoustic and electric guitars, piano and keyboards, as well as over 40 other musical instruments.
Making a Statement? • The Beatles were the first popular band to use orchestral music in their songs. George Martin scored Baroque orchestrations in several songs, such as Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby (:, In My Life, and a full orchestra in Sgt. Pepper.
The Fame: • The Beatles was a huge hit among female fans. The would chase them down and on June 25, 1967, The Beatles made history becoming the first band globally transmitted on TV to an estimated 400 million people worldwide which made them even more popular.
The End? • In 2005 the Entertainment magazine poll named the Beatles the most iconic entertainers of the 20th Century. In July of 2006, the guitar on which Paul McCartney played his first chords and impressed John Lennon, was sold at an auction for over $600,000. Till this day people all over still adore and craze the Four most iconic men in music history.
