Optical Art • “Op Art” In the 1960's, the term "Op Art" was coined to describe the work of a growing group of abstract painters. This movement was led by Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley.
Britannia - 1961 Artist: Bridget Riley Riley is precise in her line work to allow for maximum vibrant interaction of the eye and mind.
Cataract - 1967 Artist: Bridget Riley
Loss - 1964 Artist: Bridget Riley
Supernovae – 1959-61 Artist: Victor Vasarely Vasarely’s paintings are some of the most powerful examples of Op Art. He used a wide range of mathematical methods using grids.
Vega-Nor – 1969 Artist: Victor Vasarely Optical illusion of a sphere on a flat surface. The illusion is successful due to the ways in which Vasarely used color, shape, and line.
Vonal Ksz Artist: Victor Vasarely Many of Vasarely’s work leads the eye into illusory tunnels.
Cheyt M Artist: Victor Vasarely The different hues and arrangements of his brightly colored geometric shapes create an impression of movement.
