Friday 11/1/13 Aim: What is the art of Chinese Brush Painting? Do Now: Read about the artist Qi Bai-Shi and answer the questions. Homework: continue to brainstorm your animal, insect or flower choice for the Chinese Brush Painting project
Chinese Brush Painting • Aim: to capture the inner essence of the subject—its energy, life force, spirit- not just its outer appearance. • Often portrayed nature: flowers, landscapes, animals • To accomplish his goal, the Chinese painter only used black ink, and limited color. • Drawing with an ink brush comes from calligraphy (the art of writing) (from kallos= beauty, graphien=to write- Greek: beautiful writing.)
Chinese Brush Strokes • Free spirited, spontaneous brush strokes • No sketching first • No correcting your brush stroke • Little use of perspective or realistic portrayal, gives the painter freedom to better express his subjective feelings.
The Four Gentleman • Orchid • Bamboo • Chrysanthemum • Plum Blossom • Major themes in painting • Incorporate all the major brushstrokes needed to make a painting
OrchidSymbol of SpringMeans: Bright promise , unity and modesty
Real and Painted Wild Orchids • There are a variety of orchids available but the ones we will focus on are the orchids that have the long fluid leaves and small, fragile petals.
BambooSymbol of Summer Means endurance, flexibility and perseverance
Real and Painted Bamboo • www,junglephotos.com/africa/ www.susanwagnerglass.com • Bamboo grows in sections and from each section grows new branches and leaves. • Look and find the simple strokes, and see how the lifting of the brush tip creates the leaves.
ChrysanthemumSymbol of the Autumn Means triumphant in Life: Persistence, Patience and Fortitude.
Real and Painted Chrysanthemum Found at Naturgraphics.org • In the chrysanthemum, simplicity is used in such a way that it becomes more complex or intricate. • There are many different varieties of chrysanthemums, each with it’s own beauty.
Plum Blossom Symbol of Winter • Meaning: 1.Secret promise of renewal 2.Continuity & Hardiness of Life
