DESCARTES Method of doubt Meditation 1.
Descartes method of doubt • Descartes began his method of doubt because he realised he had an unsound basis for knowledge.
Doubt 1 – Can’t trust authority • Descartes argues that we can’t trust the authorities to tell us what to believe. • To trust the truth of each opinion he held would take forever so to start with Descartes attacked the fundamental believes upon which others depend.
Doubt 2 – our senses can deceive us • Descartes believed that he couldn’t have absolute confidence in the senses because he observed that they can mislead us. • We can sometimes be mislead by our senses when it comes to microscopic objects and things in the distance.
Doubt 3 – it could all be a dream • Sometimes dreams can be insane but sometimes you dream about everyday things but there is no way of distinguishing the dreaming state from the waking state therefore it is possible we are all dreaming right now and all that we perceive is false. • But even if we are dreaming, dreams are formed out of things which must really exist e.g. the parts of our body otherwise we wouldn’t recognise them
Continued ……. • So although some things may be imagery we can conclude that primary qualities, such as size number and order must be real. So even in dreams there are things which can’t be doubted.
arrrghhh • Descartes thought that an evil demon could have taken over his mind. Everything he experienced would take to be an illusion, including his own body
The end by Emma and Louise The demon has scared us so were rowing home
