The main organ in the Respiratory system is the Lungs- removes carbon dioxide • Nose- filter, warm, & moisten air • An example of a tissue in the respiratory system is the alveoli. • The respiratory system supplies the blood with oxygen in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body, so it could function Structures and Functions
Air goes in your nose or mouth and through larynx goes down trachea (windpipe), through both lungs and bronchial tubes. • The role of muscles is that they contract to move ribs up and outward. • The diaphragm flattens and pushes down the abdomen. • Air pressure helps expand and contract the lungs. • Muscles in the abdominal wall in turn relax, providing room for the flattened diaphragm. Mechanics of breathing
In the alveoli, air and gasses are exchanged. • Alveoli are like bunches of grapes at the end of the bronchial tubes in the lungs. Alveolus
They both have the same job, they absorb oxygen, and release carbon dioxide. • Capillaries are small vessels in the lungs with blood and alveoli. Relationships between alveoli and capillaries
Ciliated epithelial cells sweep clean dust and germs trapped in mucus secreted by “goblet cells” in the epithelium. • Goblet cells target an infection. They kill ciliated cells or simply stop the cilia beating. Ciliated epithelium
larynx is the voice box that inhales and exhales. • Air quietly goes through the larynx the larynx will not make noise unless the vocal cords vibrate. Larynx has two vocal cords when a person speaks or makes noise the vocal cord vibrates as the person exhales and makes a noise. • Each person has a unique sounding voice by the movements of tongue and mouth. • Pharynx is a passage way for the respiratory system and digestive tracts. • The role of pharynx is to have it coordinate both inspiration and swallowing while eating. Otherwise may lead to aspiration and death. • The epiglottis is the flap that covers the larynx from the air and food from entering the lungs during the act of swallowing. Larynx and the pharynx(throat)
Every time you take a breath of air in, your skin over your stomach and chest expand. • If your skin couldn't expand you wouldn't be able to breath very good at all. • The average adult at rest takes 12 breaths a minute. • If you do the math the average human at rest would breath 17,280 breaths a year. The role of our skin in respiration
Asthma is the inherited breathing disorder I picked. 5% of the population of the U.S. has asthma. When asthma is triggered by working out or airborne triggers the airway begins to close. One inherited breathing disease
The right lung is slightly larger than the left • Smoking is a main cause of disease in this system -the respiratory system performs other roles important to breathing: • Bringing air to the proper body temperature. • Protecting the body from harmful substances. This is done by coughing, sneezing, filtering, or swallowing them. Additional information
