Skills Needed for Future Success • What is Ramp-Up? • Develop knowledge, skills, and habits for postsecondary success • Pillars: Academic, Admissions, Career, Financial, Personal/Social • Tools: Readiness Rubric & Postsecondary Plan • Why College Readiness? • The earlier the better • Better chance of getting accepted to your colleges of interest • You will have more options after high school • SMART Goals • Specific, Measurable, Achievable • Relevant, Timely

College Knowledge • Understand the expectations for college level writing… • Development, Technical Content, Purpose, Tone • Organization, Problem Definition, Precision, Editing • Identify the areas in which you need to improve • Learn the specific expectations and entry requirements for writing at a college of interest • Learn about the resources available to assist with writing at a college of interest

  5. Progress Monitoring • Readiness Rubrics help you know if you are on track to be college ready • Grades • Academic Belief • Self-Management • Effort and Persistence • Test Scores • Close readiness gaps by setting SMART Goals • Have an Action Plan - IMPORTANT!

Pair and Share • I know that the sooner I prepare for my postsecondary career the better the opportunities I will have in the future. • I understand the expectations needed for successful college level writing. • I know that setting up Action Plans will help me close any gaps that I may have with my postsecondary readiness.

  7. Do What You Are • Personality Type survey • Survey results help students learn about • Common careers for your personality type • Strengths and blind spots • Gain more self-awareness • Common learning styles for your personality type • Personality surveys are not an exact science • But can help guide you in future decision-making and career exploration

  8. Personal/Social Opportunities & Challenges • College Panelists’ Stories.. • College they attended • Chosen Major and/or Careers • Personal/Social Challenges they encountered on their path to postsecondary; or during college • Personal/Social Opportunities • Best and Most Difficult Part of College • What they did, or wished they’d done, in High School to help them prepare for college

Career, Postsecondary & High School Planning • The Readiness Rubric helps you identify and close any readiness gaps you may have • Two levels on the path to college readiness • Developing: Does Not or Partially Meets • Meeting: Meets or Exceeds • The Postsecondary Plan helps you create an academic plan that best fits your career and postsecondary aspirations • Advanced classes will help with your postsecondary readiness

Pair and Share • I know that the results from my Personality Survey can help guide me in future decision-making and career exploration. • I understand that there will be personal/social challenges and opportunities in college. • The Readiness Rubric & Postsecondary Plan will help me reach my short & long-term goals.

Preparing for Postsecondary Financial Aid • Major costs for a postsecondary education • Tuition, Fees, Room, Board • Types of financial aid that students don’t need to pay back • Grants, Scholarships, Work Study • FAFSA acronym • Free Application for Federal Student Aid • When to start working on FAFSA application • January before your freshman year of college

Postsecondary Visits and Admissions • Type of student colleges are looking for • Well-rounded student • Common admission considerations • GPA, ACT and/or SAT Score, Recommendations • Resume, Essay, Percent Accepted, Class Rank • Number of campuses should students visit • At least three • College essay tips • Tell stories, Make it personal, Use humor • Be compelling, Proofread, Be clear and concise

  13. Pair and Share • My résumé will show potential employers, colleges, or donors a summary of my skills, education, and experiences. • I understand that the FAFSA is an extremely important form to fill out that will help me pay for my postsecondary costs.
