Plan B: P.E. Teacher By: Teagan MacRae
Job Overview The career I am choosing for my Plan B career is a Gym Teacher. I wouldn’t want to be just a gym teacher but the head the athletic department for a certain school. I would also look into teaching other subjects like socials and math. A typical day would be a like day at school 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. except you would be teaching the classes.
Why a P.E. Teacher? I love sports but making it into a paying career is pretty unlikely so being a gym teacher is interesting because I love sports. I have always thought of being a gym teacher the only thing restraining me from it is the lack of pay. It fits my personality because I love sports and I love people so teaching tons of people several sports doesn't seem like a bad job.
Education I would be looking into being able to get into Kinesiology in a university. With this I could use it for a P.E. teacher or branch out from it for another career. I looked into UBCO, UBC, and UVIC for universities. My main school I am interested in is UBCO because is it the cheapest with a cost of just over $10,000 and the Human Kinetics is a good and respected course.
Salary and Future Outlook The salary is around $30,000 at the start but after you gain experience around $60,000 per year. The Future outlook for the next 20 years is still good for this career cause I believe it will still be in high demand
Working Conditions The hours are around 9a.m. – 3p.m. There is little risk of injuries if you follow safety instructions. I would be working all year with summer, winter and spring breaks. It would be indoors and outdoors depending on time of the year. It could be a little hectic at times but I think I can handle it.
Alternatives If dentist and gym teacher both did not work out I would look into being an Physiotherapist, Oil rigger or Sports doctor.
