What is it? • a WYSIWYG editor for non-technical users • shields source code • Browse, Edit, Publish -- a simple answer to updating websites
Purpose • End bottlenecks in updating web sites • Allows a wider range of folks to update web sites • Keeps control of style and layout in the hands of web masters/designers
Overview of Features • Browse • Edit • Publish • Users & Administrators • Settings • Accessibility
Features: Browse • Use it like a web browser to go the site you want to update.
Features: Edit • After browsing to a site users can “Create a Connection”, using the Connection Wizard • Connections can be slightly more difficult than setting up a FrontPage connection, but certainly manageable.
Features: Edit Cont. • Also Users & Administrators can receive keys from Administrators that give them access to sites. • A key is sent as a file in a e-mail or the Administrator can give the user the file. Double click the key file’s icon and Contribute starts up with a connection already made and a page to edit.
Features: Administrators & Users • Administrators set the permissions on web sites that allow what content users or administrators can edit. • Users can have their permissions set so as to allow only text editing and no page deletion for example.
Features: Settings/Permissions Examples: • Force relative font size • Limit creation of new pages • Limit image file size • Limit text editing • Limit file deletion
Features: Accessibility Examples: • Force alt-text for images • Using relative font sizes • Use CSS instead of <font> tags.
Findings • Very uncomplicated interface, easy to use • Accessibility options • Contribute can work with sites designed by any editor • Can insert content from Word to Excel to Contribute
Findings Cont. • Contribute can have serious problems showing a page with errors in HTML code • If a site has code that is well formed – W3C valid, a page will be editable in Contribute. There may be some initial extra set up in making sites that have valid HTML.
