  2. European Union - Advantages • Allows free trade with no tariffs or quotas • allows free movement of people to live and work • allows companies to expand and sell throughout Europe • Aid given to poorer regions to help development

  3. Aid to regions • To help poorer areas of EU develop • given to areas of high unemployment, low incomes • funding must also come from local/ national government

  4. Increases market for companies greater freedom of movement aid will be given to new countries many migrants may move to richer member countries Enlargement

Decisions on economy made in Europe, not UK changing would be complicated conversion would be very expensive it is a new currency and may not remain stable Should bring equality of prices cost of trade will be reduced for companies new companies more likely to settle in ‘Eurozone’ easier for travel - more Europeans may holiday in UK Euro

  6. NATO • Set up in 1949 to protect Western Europe from Communist USSR • the most successful alliance • end of Cold War in late 1980s

Successful alliance should be kept to defend Europe may be used as a peace-keeper e.g. Kosovo keeps USA in European defence protects members from future threats No longer a threat from Soviet Union Europe should be able to protect itself and not rely on USA the USA cannot be trusted to protect Europe NATO members do not have a common enemy NATO - advantages and disadvantages
