  3. Definition Abuse: The intentional use of physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal force on another person Unit 3: Lesson 11/12/13 - Abuse

  4. Specific Types of Abuse • Child abuse, may include • Physical abuse • Sexual abuse • Emotional abuse • Neglect or omission of care • Sexual abuse • Spousal abuse Unit 3: Lesson 11/12/13 - Abuse

  5. Child Abuse • This topic covers a wide range of parental actions, or inactions that may result in harm being inflicted on a child • Affects children of all ages • Incidents of abuse occurs in all: • Religions • Ethnic and racial groups • Geographic areas Unit 3: Lesson 11/12/13 - Abuse

  6. Child abuse - Neglect • The most prevalent form of child abuse • Results from the parent’s failure to provide adequate: • Food • Clothing • Shelter • Medical care • Education • Moral training Unit 3: Lesson 11/12/13 - Abuse

  7. Abusing parents • Most abusers were abused as children • One cause is when they place unrealistic psychological needs on their children which the child is incapable of fulfilling, leading to the abuse • Few abusers are true psycho- or sociopaths Unit 3: Lesson 11/12/13 - Abuse

Prevention of Abuse • Only since the 1960’s has child abuse risen in prominence to the point were governments have taken some steps in protecting children • Even today in the U.S. more than 6 million children are abused each year • Of this almost 2 500 of them die.   10. Spousal Abuse • Definition: the physical or emotional abuse of a spouse • Spouse: A marriage partner; a husband or wife Unit 3: Lesson 11/12/13 - Abuse

  12. Physical Abuse - examples • Restraint – being held down against your will, or not permitted to move freely • Physical assault – being hit with a slap, punch, knee, foot. Also burned, or having an object thrown at you. • Sexual assault – just because you are in a relationship you do not give up the right to your own body.   13. Verbal abuse • Abusive anger- partner blows up at you • Criticizing – derogatory remarks about weight or figure • Name-calling – being called a liar or a hypocrite • Threatening – taunts about leaving you • Blaming – tells you their behaviour is your fault Unit 3: Lesson 11/12/13 - Abuse

Emotional Manipulation The following are some examples of Emotional Manipulation • You make a statement and it is turned around • Crazy making – they say one thing then later assure you that they did not say it • Guilt mongering – you are made to feel like you always do the wrong thing even when you do nothing at all. Financial Abuse • This may occur when one partner earns more than the other. • If you are financially dependent on your partner and recognize that having access to funds often feels like a control issue. • Having funds and getting swindled out of your money. • Money can be a means of control. How to help others? • If you hear or see abusive behavior... • Call 911 • How to suspect abuse... • Black eye, broken bones, bruises… • No good explanations • Signs of a possible abuser • Shows jealousy, humiliation, anger, threats of violence (physical or sexual) etc. Unit 3: Lesson 11/12/13 - Abuse
